Catalytic Converters...

2001 V6 Need a new Y-pipe with cats...called ford, the part is almost $2000...called an exhaust shop and they tell me that i have to have new O2 sensors ($50 a piece) they seem fine now. No lights are on...they also told me that i can't buy used cats...so i won't be finding any parts on the cheap...cheapest one was from AutoZone around $520...any ideas???

I'd like to keep this as cheap as possible cause I'm getting a new car next year...but i took a road trip and at the top of every hill on the highway, it wanted to stall...

Any suggestions would be great...

You can do this Much cheaper than 2K! Buy an h-pipe with hi-flow cats in it and then get a true dual catback of your choice. After install the whole setup should be around $600(less if you get your exhaust custom made). If your o2 sensors are bad...well those you'll need to replace but $50 a piece aint that bad. In the end you'll have a better exhaust (sounds better, gives more power, and saves gas) for about 1/4 the price of what ford wants for a new y-pipe.

Oh wait...sorry a catted midpipe is bit more expensive than I thought...however I found a catted x for $300 and a catted h for $350. If you get a custom true dual made using one of those you should still be able to get the whole thing(including midpipe and install) for $700 or less.

just go to a muffler shop and get the exhaust set up from them, they can put in new cats for u, u could by from them but i would get highflows from jegs...i think they are like 80 or less each im not sure dont quote me, but then have them put the cats in, weld u up an h midpipe, then do duals from the h back to ur choice of mufflers...u should be able to do this route (depending on cost of cats) with cats costing like 150-175, and then the custom stuff for like another 350 or so, so it smokes wat ford offered u

also if u want more power and a deeper sound, u could get longtubes while ur tearing the whole exhaust apart, that way u dont have to have to make the trip to the muffler shop twice and pay twice

performancepeddler.com has decent prices on Magnaflow cat systems if you decide to get a replacement y with cats.

I thought emission system components were covered for 100K miles from the factory through a federal law? I could be wrong. Either way, I'd find out what caused them to go bad before investing in new ones.

If you are not in Calif. the following is a bolt up Y-pipe with high flow cats
for a reasonable price. I would think it would cost as much to have a local exhaust shop weld up 4 cats.

If it's a Calif. car there is a requirement to use OE cats. I did find a web site that claimed to be able to legally sell tested used cats. A Y-pipe from them is about the same as above.

Why would he want to pay an exhaust shop to put in a new y-pipe when he could go duals?

This one appears to be a Y-pipe, but looks to have only one converter per side. Neither is smog legal in Calif.

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...EAST30348.html

The issue is if it's a Calif. car (which may not be the case) then modifications to the converters are not allowed. That's my understanding, but I wouldn't take my word from it, but rather contact the state.

Yes...now that one is in fact a y-pipe. However, my statement still stands why pay a shop to install a whole new y-pipe when he could go true duals?

It depends on what state the car is registered in. I just wouldn't advise anyone to make modifications that are not smog legal. The only state where this would be a problem is probably Calif., so if the car is registered outside of Calif. then your suggestion is fine.

A complete Y-pipe should be an easy do it yourself job, while installing aftermarket converters and modified exhaust would require welding, which most people can't do themselves. So the new Y-pipe might also be cheaper.

To avoid further confusion, this link is for a V8 engine.

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...EAST30455.html

The other one is for a V6.
