Question

Um, I have a few questions...

Ok, i'll try to keep it simple, lol. . . as you may have noticed, i haven't been on this forums long, but i've done a lot of reading on it, and i'm trying to tie a few things together that i haven't picked up yet, and also i just want your general opinion on a few things.

first, i know this may sound like a stupid question, along with the one that follows this, but...

I've seen "8.8 rear t-lock" meantioned a lot... i don't exactly get what that is, means, and does...

also, I see people talk a lot about "bolt ons" now are they reffering to a specific list of items, or is it basically what is says, and item that gives you performance that you just "bold on" without having to do extensive work... like a CAI?

also... what are UD pulleys? i have an idea what they are, i would just like to clarify.

now, what would be your general opinion of some mods to go with to increase my horsepower... i know more hp = more $... and since i currently don't have a large suply of $ laying around, i would like to keep it fairly cheap, i know i won't get much hp with that, but i just want to start small, and work my way up, buying what i can when i can afford it... i was thinking i would start off with getting dual exhaust and a CAI... I talked to a profession muffler shop, and got a quote that they could install dual flowmasters for about $260, that sounded a lil cheap to me, but some friends assured me he knew what he was doing.

I'm not really needed brand specif installs (though you are more than welcome to list what you recommend in brands, and it will be much appreciated) but i'm mostly looking at a list of what i should think about first, and after that for a little while. I was thinking about nos, or a turbo, maybe both, but a ways down the road (at least a year for the turbo, maybe nos when i get a lil $ depending on your feedback) so you don't have to mention those. but gears, ignition, shift kits, w/e, and any order you think i should install in is appreciated.

Sorry for the long post! lol

its basically a rear end out of a GT, its a stronger case housing from and allows you to handle more power. from the factory Ford GTs came stock with an 8.8inch rear and with a posi-trac that allows both wheels to spin rather then one like your 7.5inch rear end

also, I see people talk a lot about "bolt ons" now are they reffering to a specific list of items, or is it basically what is says, and item that gives you performance that you just "bold on" without having to do extensive work... like a CAI?

bolt ons are basically easy modifications you can do to your car with simple hand tools and the part requires a simple un-bolt and bolt on type work. the list consist generally of the follow but can include more:
Cold air intake
Exhaust
headers
Pulleys(underdrive pulleys)
throttle body
Tuner(hand held device)
Chip
Spark plug wires
coil pak

but can also include:
aluminum driveshaft
althought not along easy bolt on list its usually just add in gears and posi
intakes(upper and lower intakes ported and polished)
short throw
Jmod
some suspension

also... what are UD pulleys? i have an idea what they are, i would just like to clarify.
they're underdrive pulleys, its basically a smaller crank pulley to increase power

now, what would be your general opinion of some mods to go with to increase my horsepower... i know more hp = more $... and since i currently don't have a large suply of $ laying around, i would like to keep it fairly cheap, i know i won't get much hp with that, but i just want to start small, and work my way up, buying what i can when i can afford it... i was thinking i would start off with getting dual exhaust and a CAI... I talked to a profession muffler shop, and got a quote that they could install dual flowmasters for about $260, that sounded a lil cheap to me, but some friends assured me he knew what he was doing.

ask if that is still using your Y pipe or a true dual exhaust
Intake and exhaust is a good start
other cheap mods under $200 are
plug wires
spark plugs
ported upper intake
underdrive pulleys are about that range
coil pak

each item of course not all together

parts that are about $200-400
headers
hand held tuner
suspension
ported lower intake
throttle body
gears and posi

if your looking not so much money which by this thread it seems like it
bolt ons modifications and nitrous (75shot) is probably your best bet for now then later when you have money a turbo kit

nitrous can be safe and fun. and well rewarding
i wouldnt go about getting it though until your aware how it works and what makes it work
Sorry for the long post! lol

your questions are answered in the red

lol, thank you all for the information, and i have a couple books by Haynes manuals on performance and customizing, and they talked about nos, so i understand how it works, and also it seems that I would be able to run my engine turbocharged without forging my heads or cams as long as i keep it under 10psi boost, right? (i hope i said that right, lol)

and what the guy said about my exhause was that they cut it at they Y pipe, and ran new pipes down the side, so you had the true dual exhaust, but he keeps your stock pipes everywhere else. does that sound right? i thought part of getting aftermarket exhaust was that the pipes were less restricting than stock, allowing fumes to excape quicker with less backpresser.... I did hear a V6 that they had just finished install dual on and it sounded nice, but i don't know if it possibly had any enging work (from what i heard, cam size and other things can make a difference on that also)

ok, and from what i've read on other posts, and yours, ..... i probably won't need the 8.8 will i? at least, not for a little while, so should i put a t-lock on my stock rear end? or would i need the 8.8 not far down the road and should save money by upgrading now?

yes under 10 psi and turbo is safe on a stock engien with the proper tune, chris was over 11... the reason he blew his was he didnt give it long enough idle time

yes you can have that set-up for duals. if you want a full dual system. then get the headers, mid pipe and catback.

7.5 t-lok will be fine unless you plan on going over 350ish rwhp. detroit truetrac on a 7.5 can handle more than that.. 8.8 isnt really needed unles syou are pushing oddles and oddles of hp and tq and launching hard on slicks

the exhaust sounds right

theres no forged heads or cams
just ported heads or new or regrind camshafts
you can safely run 10psi with a dyno tune

ok, thanks. and i remember reading that about chris, that had to have sucked... and how much would that cost to get headers? i heard that short tubes aren't much better than the stock manifold, and wouldn't be worth the money, and can you have turbo with LT? and how much power gain is there over stock and LT? and if i didn't get headers, would the midpipe be worth it? if so, they guy at the shop said that he could replace the pipes with new ones, but it would cost a little more, i don't know how much, he didn't give me a price, but said that the stock pipes would still be good, that was before i knew as much about how everything worked with the car... (not saying i know everything!!! lol, but i understand a lot of it way better!)

bah i didnt even think about turbo when i said that. a turbo kit would come with the headers. the exhaust would need to be fabricated. i think the tma kit comes with a y-pipe which could be cut for duals. you cannot do turbo with LT

lol, ok thanks, i thought i remembered reading that on here about the LT and turbo, and seeing as the turbo will be a lil while, what do you think about getting the dual exhaust, but keeping the stock mannifolds, maybe H pipes? and then just changing the exhaust when i get the turbo, it shouldn't take much should it?

also, when you get a turbo, does it matter what size your exhaust pipes are? (as in will i have to have all new exhaust depending on the turbo i choose? i heard that i would, but i didn't quite think so)

yeah... what woody said. if you really plan on doing the turbo thing, then get the supporting mods you need, i.e. beefed up rear end, beefed up tranny, suspension. suspension isnt needed but can be helpful on a high powered car if you plan on having a lot of track time.
