straight headers
what i did was just disconnected my muffler from my y pipe and it was freaking loud. i had the muffler bolted on to 1 of the bolts so it exhaust didnt go into it. but i ended up with a cracked y pipe so maybe jimmy rig it another way? also if you do that it backfires alot lol. maybe you could just take off the muffler so it has some more pipe to go to or something.

it wont backfire, but since you lose backpressure, your loss of backpressure makes the crackling sound. backfire is very different than this, and results in severe engine damage.
no mufflers is illegal for street use, so the loudest non-emissioned exhaust setup would be mac long tubes, mac short off road H pipe, and flowmaster race mufflers dummped. loud is not always good on the even-firing essex motor though.

usually a poor tune that either runs the wrong timing or the wrong a/f ratio will cause you to run rich and unburnt fuel will make its way into the exhaust pipes where it is hot and pressurized to explode back up into the exhaust port. this is very dangerous, and this is backfiring

you can get some thing that hooks up to your colectors so when you flip a switch you can run straight headers you can get this at jegs.com but i dont recomend running like that very long because then you will end up cracking your block....and the reason why it "back fires" its because there is no back preasure

yeah but it isnt a good idea cause like people said you can crack the block or a head or even burn a vavle.
a motor needs backpressure, when exhaust gas comes out of the cumbustion chamber it flows over the falve and out of the heads into the exhaust. with backpressure some of that gas circulates back, cooler now that it was before, and then finally exits the cars exhaust system. if you run straight headers that gas just constatly flows through which creaes a hot spot and can really damage a motor. when i put my exhaust on i put on a 160 degree thermostat to make sure the engine cooled proopely now that i took away some of that back pressure it had in its stock form
