2001 Mustang misfiring

My 2001 V-6 is misfiring. It seems to do this only when I am accelerating. This just started happening suddenly two weeks ago. It seems to have started right after I ran through a puddle of water. I changed the spark plugs and it didnt help. The auto shop told me it was the wires. I changed the wires and it didnt help. The check engine light came on originally, but went out after I changed the plugs. The repair shop said they saw no codes saved. What else can I do to solve this?

welcome to the forums.
let it dry out and try cleaning your mass airflow sensor.

Thanks, I looked at it and it didnt have speck of dust on it. The air filter and was dry. Its been a few weeks so I think that any water would have evaporated by now. I was thinking of replacing the ignition coil but i'd hate to waste the money on another remedy that doesnt work. Ive replaced the wires and plugs. Could the timing have been thrown off?

i doubt it but you could always grab a timing gun and check it.

Could it be the type of wires and plugs used? The guy at Advance Auto Parts told me that the ones sold to me were the factory installed. "Xact" brand wires and I dont remember the plugs, I think Bosche. But being brand new, wouldn't they still work good for at least a little while? I gapped the plugs at .52-.56. Thats what it said inside the hood of the car. Im starting to second guess what Ive allready done. This is getting really frustrating.

Bosh are really crappy in mustangs, i wouldnt be surprised if they have fouled up already, as for the car misfiring, if its in park and you rev the engine from there, does it still misfire? or only misfire if its in gear?

It mainly misfires when its under a load; when accelerating or climbing a hill. The mechanics at carmax told me the spark plug wires were shorting to ground, but replacing them didnt help.

go to autozone and ask them if you can plug in the coil pack just to see if thats what you need, i let people down here do it all the time.

the mechanic at carmax just told me that becuase i changed the plugs before the wires, that if the wires were bad, they could of fouled the plugs again and that why changing the wires didnt solve the problem. Does that sound right?

it could make a little bit of sense but only if you had alot of sludge and shit inside the engine, like in the gas, then the spark plug doesnt produce as big or great a spark as it could and isnt able to burn more efficient inside the cylinder, try some of the cheap autolites in there with the new wires, if you have bosh in there right now i would change them out anyway.

wow lol no offense to you but thats the funniest thing i've ever heard...well one of them
lol shorting to ground lol
the spark plug itself is a ground lol the threads
and if it was shorting to ground you'd have much more serious problems

did you replace the plugs yourself?
check and make sure on your wires on the coil are 5-6-4 then to the motor in that correct order for the driver side, that is by far the most common error for these cars
second
never ever use bosch plugs

yea, never use bosch. i sell them at work and they are garbage in every single car. Never use anything that sounds expensive either, like platinum or double platinum. those $1.64 plugs work best.

Im having the exact same problem on my 02, I replaced the wires today with xact wires from autozone and my car is running even worse now. One thing I did mess up however was the wiring, I accidently crossed cylinders 5 and 6. I switched it back and now it runs but its still a lot worse than before. Is it possible that by crossing 5 and 6 I could have broke anything?

no. I do recommend if you a a multimeter check your restance of your spark plug wires. they should all match. I do it everytime i buy wires and i have found lots that are no good and if you have bad wires then your car will run like crap.

here is a spec
conventional plug wire has a resistance of 10,000 to 15,000 ohms per foot of length--if it's measurably higher, the wire probably is bad. An absolutely failed wire will have a hairline break somewhere, and the resistance will be infinity.

it should help

i've got a 01 6 also doing the exact thing. mine has only been miss firing at lower rpm acceleration. around 30 mph easy acceleration it sputters a little but if i hammer it it runs better. i know the mass airflow is good and the plugs only have less than 30,000 on them. i took it to the car wash the other day and when i left it sounded like it was a WRX..... im guessing it has something to do with the coil pack and a loose connection somewhere along the line.

to the OP did you get it worked out yet? sounds like one of the things you havent tried to mess with yet is the coil pack, imma stick with that till we rule that one out.

welcome to mm shakerstang!!!
