pretty simple intake question...
so i was thinking of painting my upper intake manifold black with red letters..who woulda thought i know...but will i need a new gasket for where the upper and lower meet? and would it be worth it to take the upper and lower both out to see how much gunk is in there and maybe smooth out the ports of both...not massive porting but a little past stock and to smooth it out..and i can do this without a garage and a few simple tools right aslong as i keep the hood closed so nothing falls in there? im not 100% sure when or if i will do it just kinda lookin ahead of time...thanks

Hell, if you're gonna take that upper off, might as well wait, save up, and have lower/upper ported and polished professionaly when you take it apart.

do not port or clean anything while its still in the motor. your likely to get gunk that goes down in there in the motor
i would just clean out the upper. while it off and yes get a new gasket its probably as old as the car

Send the intakes to me for some porting, and why not the heads as well, make a whole project out of it. And for sure replace the gaskets. Removing the upper intake is VERY simple, the lower is slightly more involved but still shouldnt be too difficult. As for painting it you will most likely want to smooth it out first or it will not turn out well. And make sure to use some good quality paint, no spray paint or anything like that.
