I have a '99 GT, and I got $200 to spend on an audio system, speakers and all. Any recommendations on what I should get? I am a mod newb but I have a buddy who will help me with the install!

well $200 wont get you very far at all... for a good sound system you will be spending more than double that amount... most of the speakers and equipment you can get for $200 is crap and your stock is better than most of that stuff. save your money and get you some good stuff. if you need any help with selecting your audio then give me a hollar

With $200 you can get a head unit...and have some money left over for some food.

2K would be a start to a competition system...

Most competition systems run upwards of $5K...That is if you are really going for REAL DB contests and such...If you just want to compete in your local fairs DB contest in the lower levels of the stream then 2K can get you started...

For $200 I would go with a component set-up...You could maybe find a halfway decent component set-up for the front for $200...

Check out www.crutchfield.com

If you just want a standard sound good system for a DD car you could get away with a NICE set-up for that for around 1K or so...That would be like 2 deent subs, an amp, rear deck speakers, door speakers, and tweeters...Check out the sales that crutchfield put on and you could end up getting a good deal...

Or if you know of a local car audio wholesale shop that would be great...

I know in Louisville Kentucky we have a place called "Smart Shoppers" that normally have good deals on stuff...

crutchfield is a good place to buy from but its really expensive... your best bet for a good system but a not very expensive one would be from Polk Audio.. i used to have 2 Polk 10's and a Kenwood amp and it was loud as hell. Kicker is a good company and so is audiobahn... Rockford Fosgate has some good stuff but they are over-priced and over-rated. If you look for the right products then you can have a competition sounding system for less than half the price. Power Acoustik is another good brand.. their stuff is cheap and sounds good... they are my personal fav. and ill be upgrading my system to full Power Acoustik products

lol nailed it

$200 wont get you too far man.

you can get a 12in sub or 2 with the box...and if your lucky an AMP with the wires.

for what you want, speakers, and everything, your looking at more then $200.
my brother paid over $1000 on his system...its most likely much more then you want but he got all the speaker done in his car, 2 amp's, some other thing idk wat it is and 3 12inch subs

basically, your gunna need more money

well i have 3 12's and a 1200 watt amp.. and it didnt cost me anywhere near $1000... aminly cuz my amp and 1 of the subs i got from a friend brand new for $200 but thats a rare thing... the main thing you gotta think about is the sound you want to go for... its not all about being loud but about having good quality sound.. go to a sound shop or your local circuit city or best buy and listen to the audio there.. decide which you think has the best sound (polk has done an awesome job in my opinion)

edit: 2 subs not 1

yea i have a mofo 10'' sub, its 2400 watts and rms at 1250. it was $120 off ebay and it kicks real real hard. so i would deff suggest Power Acoustik stuff. i have a 2000 watt amp that i got off ebay for $100 and i built my own box to fit in that crazy trunk but that was close to 200 for the set up. i dont think i would run it w/ the stock head unit, one with a seperate sub output works alot nicer.

but yea i do agree that in most cases 200 wont get you hardly anywhere.
but if u want good deal... most of the stuff i bought was 50% off on ebay

guys guys guys... (and gals.. don't want to offend....)

I don't think LenchikUCLA is looking to spend a TON of cash on a sound system.....

For $200, I would recommend getting simply the head unit itself. You can find some pretty decent ones around that price. You won't win competitions, and you won't compete with the ricer crowd, but that isn't the point.

A good head unit will also work quite well with your factory speaker system, about the only thing you may need is a kit to fit the head unit into your car and a wiring coversion kit to adapt your factory plugs over to your new unit.

After all that.. THEN you can start saving up for serious cash on other upgrades

200 dollars could get u a deck and speakers
or u could maybe get everything(deck, speakers, subs, amp) but there not gunna be the big name brand stuff but u would be suprised that some of the cheap stuff actually sounds better then expensive stuff

my brother and my friends all go name brand stuff and b4 they got there subs my system in my old car with just a 80 dollar deck and some like 20 dollar speakers from ebay sounded better then there sony decks and pioneer speakers and was about twice as loud as theres

and if u do get subs build ur own box if u can ull save about 50 bucks
but u have to make sure u get the demensions and everything right so if u cant do it right just buythe box
also if i were u dont get cheap subs there blow to easy
mtx is a good brand for subs

just look around for a 10 bass tube or maybe an 8in. They sound pretty decent, not sure if you can find a 10" for under 200 though.
