port and polish

ight guys im getting ready to start my port and polish job. yes my dad and i are gonna do it ourself. i know you would recommend us taking it somewhere but we don't have the money to spend on it so this is my only option. but before i start are there any tips you guys would give me ? we are doing the tb and upper and lower intake. i also plan on getting an intake spacer from vap auto. i wanted to do a cam but dad won't let me get into that much right. but the way i look at it it's his loss cause when we do get a cam we will just have to tear it back apart. but other than a cam is there anything i could do that is around $150 that would go with the port and polish? and once again any tips are wanted and appreciated. thanks

I cant think of anything for $150 with your p&p. This thing i saw on horsepower tv was the guy make a custom bracket that bolted on the intake and connected to the vacuum and sucked all of the loose metal chips while he was porting..

It would be more worth it to get the Split Port Swap and then port and polish that while you still have it off your car, this way your cars only down while you do the sps.

do not start porting on your own parts. especially your first job

just gasket match it well
are you doing just intakes...if so your probably putting to much effort into a single port

well i have been playing around with the intakes off of my dads old 351 Cleveland so i have a lil experience and i am practicing every chance i get. plus i am doing a ton of research. my dad said more than anything will will just go in and gasket match and smooth things out more than anything. but i plan on trying to smooth the tb out alot. plus we are putting the intake spacer in so i am hoping to gain about 15 to 20 hp. that should be a close estimate shouldn't it?

no we will do upper and lower. thats not a bad amount of gain for 100 bucks for the spacer and 20 bucks for the rotary tool.

A die grinder with 25,000 rpm & cartridge rolls (basically sand paper) is what your supposed to do it with.

Anything else you end up with problems.

But he won't be happy with the gains from the single port.

sanding rolls suck. burrs are the best but dangerous for a first timer. they can cut away pretty fast depending on the grinder. i use a tool where i can regulate the pressure

im using a die grinder with adjustable sped. the only things i have practiced with are sand paper rolls, the stone things(which i didn't like), and the diamond tipped things(which i did like) i will prolly use the diamond tipped things to gut the big stuff and the sand paper for the polish and detailing.
and for now i will happy with the 15-20 extra hp. but im sure i will be dieing for more later but hey this is a free mod and a chance for me to get experience and also my first time tearing into my mustangs motor

Good luck man. This way later on you can do the sps, sell your p&p single port, and you'll have experience that will help you p&p your split port. Post pics! BTW aren't you the asking about a split port engine swap?

I would not reccomend cartridge rolls as it will take forever and get you minimal results. An aluminum burr is by far the way to go and many places such as summit sells them. I believe they have a three piece set for sixty something. The rotary stones may be a little more effective than sand paper rolls but are best for just smoothing things out after a burr and smoothing the entrance to the ports. Then use the cartridge rolls to smooth things out, start with a 40 grit and move to an 80 or possibaly even a 100 grit depending on how smooth you want to go. Standard abraisives sells great cartridge rolls at a decent price too. Be careful with the burrs though as they remove alot of material quicklyand in some spots such as the curves or corners you need to be carefull not to cut through or you will be doing some welding. The main concept to keep in mind is you want a smooth continous curve with as little bumps, ridges, and obstructions as possible. Any flat or square spots (90degree turns) can result in actually worse flow than stock and you do not want that. I dont overally reccomend attempting porting on your own, expecially with no previous practice, but if you are going to do it, take your time to do it right and expect to spend a decent amount of time doing this as it is by no means a quick little job.
Also if you are leaving the heads alone you may want to consider only gasket matching the top of the lower and just smoothing out the bottom to give it a tapered effect, otherwise if you gasket match the bottom of the lower you will be left with a ridge where it meets the heads and this will for sure be an obstruction and hurt your flow.
