01 V6 Would Not Turn Over

2001 Mustang V6 Convertible. 122000 miles. Automatic.
Drove a short distance in 94 degree heat. The UV was high it was hot!
Stopped in a store for about 5 minutes. Came out and it wouldn't turn over. The dials came on, the radio on. The bells were dinging.
But nothing when I cranked the key. The battery cables were a little corroded, that I will fix this weekend. Didn't see anything else wrong.

This car lost the fuel pump a few months back. At that time it would crank and turnover, the plugs were firing but no go go. I replaced the fuel pump and it started right up. Oddly the gas mileage hasn't been the same. I know that 4.00 a gallon is one problem, but I suspect I'm getting maybe 10-15 now where I used to get 20-25mph. That seemed to happen in conjunction with the fuel pump.

So the other day the check engine light came on. I looked around and didn't see anything. Thinking it was a misfire or o2 sensor I just keeping to my normal routine, work, drink, sleep, work, watch sports, sleep. After a day or two, 3 starts maybe, the light went off. It came on twice since then about a day apart. It really seemed it would go off after a few starts, reseting itself I think is what it's designed to do, right?.

The check engine light was off when it wouldn't turnover today. The tank was about 1/4 full. I couldn't even hear the soleniod clicking. It was as if the thing was dead, except all the dash and radio was working. I sat there waiting on my girlfriend for about 30 minutes. I cranked the key to try it about the time she pulled in and VROOOM it started just fine. She was not real happy with me but I assured her I wasn't pulling anything.

I've got a code reader at my friends house. He's out of town but will get it to me in a few days. Anyone got any quick ideas? The battery is only 2 years old but it could have lost a cell or something. I'll replace it when I get paid anyway.

The gas mileage going down, the fuel pump going out, may or may not be related. Could it be the Fuel pressure sensor or a Cam/Crank sensor. Of maybe just the battery or Starter or Solenoid. Or could it be the ignition switch itself. Again it was probably the hottest day of the year so far!

It hasn't done it again, nor has engine light been on since it wouldnt turnover.

sounds like that starter. your story is very similar to what happened to one of my friends. first i would get the starter checked, then clean the battery terminals and to be safe i would have that checked as well. and check that code whenever you can. i would also check the plugs.

Well if your gauges came to life it's not battery and i doubt it's the sensors because the engine would still be cranking, I think there is an electrical issue somewhere between your ignition and your starter, you might be grounding out or have a faulty switch. Thats my 2 cents, and yes that is what the computer is supposed to do, it wll clear error codes once the problem has stopped occuring.

im just saying it would be a good idea to get the battery checked since he did say there was corrosion, which will kill the battery if not taken care of.

Starter IMO, do the mechanics trick if it does this again, grab a wrench or something and hit the starter a couple of times, if it starts up right after that then its your starter. had to do it to a black 04 mustang at work just yesterday!

Don't know about all the other problems, but for the engine not cranking, the first thing to check is the battery charge, and clean the terminals. In hot weather batteries tend to fail if they are weak. Often the lights will come on and all but the battery won't crank the engine especially if there is corrosion on the terminals.
