hole somewhere in exhaust

I have a hole or a leak in the front end of my exhaust. It sounds like maybe even up towards the manifold. I cant see shit but I can hear it. Sounds like a "putter" and its getting worse. It makes it even harder on this 6 with the supports for the vert underneath. Just clutters up the bottom of the car making it harder to see and get at stuff.

I was going to go out and buy either jack stands or ramps. The ramps are cheaper ($36 at AZ). They should be fine to get underneath SAFELY and take a look see right? If I can find it I could probably fix it or patch it somehow before it gets worse.

Jack stands or ramps? What do you think?

weld shop. a guy on here got his exhaust leak fixed by a weld shop for $30 the other day. It's most likely on your passenger's side on the midpipe up by the headers. it cracks from the ac condensation leaking onto it.

+1. That was me. If you can get the mid pipe off I'll bet you'll see a crack forming at the weld spot in the front end of the mid pipe. If you're under 8 years old and under 80000 miles it should be covered by Ford under the emissions warranty. If so don't take it off yourself.

while you're fixing it, make sure you try to fab up a piece of sheet metal to deflect the condensation.

Hey GF---

found something interesting on the web after reading the first 2 posts....
ford has acknowledged a problem with the AC drip onto the manifold. I cant find "clear" ruling as to if they will fix it for free or not.

I did find warantly iformation about exhaust systems being covered for 8 years or 80k miles. Do you know anything about this?

yes, that's your emissions warranty, and if you're still under it you should take the car to a dealer. I know a guy who did and they fixed the leak and fabbed the sheet metal deflector for him.

I cant thank you enough Dude. I'm going to call the dealership tomorrow and get the details. I found a PDF online that somewhat explains the situation with the exhaust 80/8 warranty. The manifolds look as though they are included. And in my opinion, it is rightfully so considering it is a blatant design flaw on the part of the engineers.

I have alot of respect for the info you gave. Thanks. This is what makes MM and its members cool.

For anyone else who reads this thread and has heard "the drip and hiss" from the AC condensation, it can lead to a crack. This is especially so in humid climates here in the Southern US. The link below has great info and its directly from Ford so its golden. The first PDF on this page (warranty giude 5th printing) is the one I seen that has the emissions info.

WARRANTY REPLY PAGE – MANUALS NOT FOUND

I will report on what the dealer says and does for this.

On the warranty link, just put in your make, year and model on the left.

thanks!!!!!

Great news! Called Ford this morning and the advisor said they simply replace the entire midpipe. They dont patch it and yes, its covered under the warranty like all others with the design flaw until 80,000 miles or 8 years.

So then I called my shop where I had the custom exhaust put in and he said that they put a "cats back" system in so that midpipe is still stock. Kick ass.

I'll report back on it this afternoon after they fix it.

Great that they fix it, they did it for me a couple years back when I was under 80k, and yeah they replace the whole midpipe, I'd make sure of this when you get it back. And as far as a deflector, if they don't put one in for you, someone on here told me they just used a piece of hose that fit over the existing one to run the water down past the exhaust manifold.

_-_ For future reference Clanton Welding on the corner of Benjamin and Sligh welded up my midpipe for $30 in just a couple of hours.

Update.
This really creates a "clubhouse" type thread over the way the dealerships interpret the warrantys. 6 out of 8 I called said that they never heard of this "warranty". WTF? Good for me, I just got back from the dealership in Bradenton (which at first I thought were assholes). They had to order the parts. He said he's order the midpipe and some other shit and will do all the work tomorrow.

cool thing is that i live 25 miles away. He said if I drop it off in the morning, he'll have someone drive me home and pick me up. How cool is that? This dealership is proving that they are worth buying a new car from.

after this is all done, ford will get a letter about them with specific names and the owner of the dealership too. It means alot to them to get positive feedback. Especially when the other dealers in the area dont have a fu-kin clue. In fact, some were rude with me like I was trying to scam them or something. That was crappy. I just want my car fixed and the corporate office obviously seen their mistake and wants to correct it.

anyhow, I'll write a little tomorrow after I get it back. As usual, until its back in my hands working fine and I havent paid a dime to get it that way.... better not count my chickens till they hatch.

Blah to Ford, cool what Bradenton is doin for you. When I had mine fixed under warranty it was at the Ford Quality Care Center on Gunn Hwy. I never contacted a dealership.

update

They put the new mid pipe in. They had a really hard time doing it though. apparently, the muffler guy I used made my exhaust without some "flange" in the middle after the cats. so essentially, its just one long ass pipe underneath. To swap out the mid pipe, he said they generally unbolt it at the flange. They couldnt with mine because its all one welded piece. They disconnected the whole exhaust and let it down. I watched. looked like a pain in the ass.

Anyhow, they fixed it to a point. I noticed after I left there is still a slight leak up front. It really pissed me off. I think they had to move so much shit around that they just messed something else up. I called bak to the dealer and he was real cool. He said bring it back and we'll find the leak and fix it.

Im taking her back on Monday.

But the bottom line is that this shit is all free even with my custom exhaust from the cats back. so the only thing I losing is time and thats better than money for now.
