Well I'll probably do one performance mod, then an asthetic(? is that the right word?) mod. Where do you guys suggest I start? In terms of money, and whatever can up my horsepower, without damaging, or potentially even help my gas mileage.

exhaust or cold air is always a good place to start. the exhaust my cost a lil but the cold air off of ebay will be cheap fun and easy.

btw welcome to the forum. these guys here are the best in the world imo. they know everything. all you gotta do is ask.

gears will be your biggest bang for buck besides nitrous

turbo is the biggest bang for the buck. i dont care what anyone says.
every guy that i know that runs nitrous says this
"ha nitrous cheap! i spend about no less then $50+ going to the track"
yeah nitrous is the bang for the buck the first few times out. it quickly adds up, changing plugs, filling bottles. bottle pressure, heat.

turbo you pay a lot at first but you have the power all the time there. you can runjust as if you were stock on the street. gains from 10-100+rwhp can be at a touch of a button or twist of the wrist. you dont run out of it

its safer power thats their all the time. and doesnt eat up plugs or back fire most of all =)

Does turbo hurt your gas mileage? Another thing I worry about is insurance payments, being a 17 year old male driver, insurance isn't cheap. Will having turbo bump up my payments? And roughly, what does it cost? Can I install it myself?

tmaturbo sells a cheap (but good) tubro kit for something like $3500 which is very cheap for a turbo kit.

i went and got a race kit though for performance

So. Say you just bought a 2002 Mustang v6. What are the first mods you do (both exterior and performance) that wont hurt MPG, but increase rwhp, that isnt over say $500. And of course, exterior wont really help hp.

and the thing with a turbo, u can do stuff like head porting, cam, udps and cat-back and the turbo will work with them. the biggest thing with modding and mpg, keep ur foot out of it. in therory, if u increase the hp, so ur at lower rpm to make the same hp as u did at a higher hp before the mod, u should get better gas mileage but that isnt always the case because having more power is alot more tempting to romp on the gas, killing ur mpg.
its about time u showed up chris

if ur gonna stay N/A, CAI and pullies (that might be over 500). if ur gonna go FI, id go tune and pullies

well i got a v8 and a v6 and the the mods i added to my v6 is cold air intake heads back some nice super 44 flowmasters and new lights...no matter what you do bro make sure you get a V6 pendant.i can understand you wanting to look like a mach1 but dont fall into the poser side...my advice is wait and buy a v8...but do what you wish...

Okay, I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but the CAI is not going to show that much for gains untill you have modded other things. IMO a TB (throttle body) or a more free flowing exhaust would be the way to go. Not much gain in the short run, but the stock air intake is adequate untill you are putting some more power down. The only real way to show significant gains out of these cars is more into FI (fuel injection for most, but Forced Induction in this case) and PnP (Port and Polish) of intakes and heads / valves.

The first thing I would personally do (this is what I have done, and I've had my car for 8 years now) is remove the Intake silencer (snorkel). This is a very easy task and you can hear your car a little bit better. See the article at Mustang World Snorkel Removal

Then buy yourself a shifter. I don't have an entire drop in, but I had a custom arm cut from billet aluminum as well as a new shift knob. I don't know if you have an Auto or Manual, so this will depend on which tranny you have.

After that, I have done nothing but add a K&N drop in filter and a set of Bosch Platinum +4's. My car has been running strong since, and I have 50k miles on it on the original charging system (8 years and going strong... **knocks on wood**). I also AVERAGED 36 MPG on the freeway from Northern Cali to Columbus Ohio last year (in the winter).

Whatever you choose to do, good luck and have fun!

platinum 4+ plugs(bosch) is the worst plug you can put in your car so you know

and technically a lot of guys dont refer to nitrous as forced induction
