E Brake
K about 2 weeks ago, I went to use my emergency brake, pulled up on it, and the front bolt ripped right out...
Number 1, why in the world would this even happen, its a 2000, no rust really anywhere on it, it was in Florida all its life up until a few months ago, so no salt no nothing, not that it matters, because this is on the inside of the car, but just makes no sense Now I need to rip out all of the interior, weld a plate back in there and put my car all back together again. I mean unless I can find a stic welder, cause MIG and TIG welders just spark too much and Im not dealing with that.. I guess Im just wondering if this has happened to anyone else or just a reason. I mean did it happen because its being used too much or is it just because they bolted it to rediculously thin metal to begin with? |

I haven't honestly looked at mine, but it could be thin metal. that seem's kind of strange though.
By any chance, did yo upurchase the car used? Is there a posability it was involved in an accident that could have possibly weakened things?? |

I did buy it used, I knew the people I got it from though, and it was never in an accident or anything, they never really abused it. I mean Im sure they romped on it here and there but nothing too serious. But I looked in there, and it is very very thin metal.. My ex husband looked at it and was shocked, because there were only 2 bolts holding the E brake handle on, and the metal was so thin, he told me what gauge it was but I cant remember. But I mean the bolt that ripped out, completely ripped out, its still connected to the ebrake handle bracket thing, but the nut is still on the bolt, and the metal that was inbetween the top of the bolt and the nut, is still there, so when i take the nut off Im going to get a nice little scrap of metal back. It definately left a hole

lol jk.gl fixing it though. mine works and isnt broken just doesnt work well

LOL. I really dont like wrench on it though. Thats why I didnt understand why this happened. It has to be because the metal it is bolted to is so super thin.. Because it was hard to pull up on to begin with and I can definately see why it happened as far as the thin metal and all. I just cant believe they would even of bolted it to that thin of metal. I dont know. Maybe I got the bad mustang lol

I'll look at mine tonight, I have my whole interior out anyway. I am shocked that they would put thin metal there, especially considering they know the brake handle will be used so much...

Exactly, thats why when it happened I was like you have GOT to be kidding me... then I looked in there and I was like hmmm, that kind of explains why that would happen...

Yes I did. I took pictures of the bolt that ripped out and how thin the metal was, can I just post it here or does it have to go somewhere else?

AND it is so much tighter than it was.. But when I actually got the bolt out, You could see this happened before, and someone tried welding it, they did a horrid job welding it so I can see why it broke again, but anyways, what a difference...

K I lied, the pictures didnt come out right, just tried retaking them again with the digital camera but its coming out too fuzzy so I give up...
Doesnt really matter though, but I know a few people were interested in how thin the metal actually was.... |

same thing happend to mine...you'll need an extra buddy, a slightly bigger bolt, washers big enough to cover the whole and more and a nut and ur good

Yeah It was a piece of cake, got it done a few nights ago..
At least Im not the only one this happened to.. Dont you agree though that the metal it was originally bolted to was super thin? Was on mine at least... |

Yeah, Mine was like that for about a month, and that was enough of that.... But like I said, now that its fixed, its alot better and WAY tighter than it was when I first got the car...

In the future don't yank the e-brake all the way. I have found that if you do it gently and pull it just to the sweet spot it makes for a much more controlled experience.
