MY next mod 8.8 rear and 4.10's

Ok so I was lookin on line and all the 7.5 in posi units I saw were in the 200 dollar range before tax and shipping. Then I came across a 8.8 rear out of a 98 GT for $250 It happened to be a complete rear also. Standouts I noticed were drilled and slotted rotors, and new brake pads, a traction bar, and of course because it is a limited slip as opposed to oped diff. also has springs and shocks, but ill prolly sell those since as far as I know theyare not aftermarket upgrades. The bad...the calipers, traction bar, and shocks(should I end up using them) are red, which wont go well with my whole black and blue theme. So far the best offer I have gotten is $150 for a set of new 4.10 gears. So once I get the 4.10(lots of them were up for sale locally before)I will just need 3/4 inch wheel spacers and then Ill be ready to get it geared and installed. Of course the first, and cheapest order of business will be painting the calipers and traction bar lol. So now a few questions: Are used gears safe? How hard is a rear end swap to do? what all is involved? What would I need?(I can get access to a buncha tools and a lift) How hard is it to istall gears since the rear is currently out of the car? And lastly would there be any hope of getting traction with the stock wheels and 205's on them?

used gears arent safe. a rear end swap isnt too difficult especially since you can use a lift. its just basic unbolt the old and bolt up the new. you need to have someone experienced to change the gears. everybody else will say the same thing. as far as traction... im not sure

if your asking about doing gears most likely you should do it yourself
you'll need a dial indicator or a way of checking backlash
plus a torque wrench

Well on the bright side I found someone who knows how to do gears, And after I could probably use his shop to do the rear end swap. What are everyones thoughts on 4.56 gears?

This is what he said
With drums an FOX rear is 59.25 wheel mount to wheel mount. With FOX track discs, it is 59.5. An SN95 from 94 to 98 is 61 inch wheel mount to wheel mount. The 99 and later are 62 inch. All dimensions include the brake drums or rotors.

the v6 brake line is in a different spot than the 8.8

The 86-98 8.8 housings are the same dimensions, only the 94-98 axles are 3/4" longer than the Fox ones. The 99-04 housings are actually about 1.5" wider, and the axles are about 1.5" longer than the Fox ones, making the 99-04 complete rears about 3" wider in total than Fox rears, or about 1.5" wider than the 94-98 rears.

Yeah since I'm using the 98 rear, I'm gonna need 3/4 inch wheel spacers. And how does 500 for a rebuild and install of the gears? For that price he's also gonna just swap the rears.

So does that sound like a good price?
So far Im out $250 for the rear eng, $50 for the 4.10s(hope this doesnt fall through) and the install, swap and ebuild will be 500.

if youre goinna keep those stock tires 4.56 are way to tall youll just do a giant burnout everytime you launch. if you throw some drag radials on there than def go for the taller gear if you dont plan on forced induction in the future

Went with the 4.10's so far im at a cost of 300 for the rear end and gears. Now need to find wheel spacers. then rebuild of the rear, the swap and the gearing, and all the parts needed will be 550.
