i have the same problem occasionally with mine... it tends to happen after i start it up.. i usually give it a few minutes to drop the idle and let the engine warm up. after that it runs fine

+1 on missing 2 cylinders. Haha.
If it's an auto then you have tranny issues. Time for a 5-speed conversion. Check the fluid, if you're low that may fix some issues but won't fix the damnage that's already been done. |

if its not tranny related, i would start with easy stuff like a fuel filter and what not. maybe its starving...

It has to be a tranny issue, he didn't say that the motor stalls or boggs down.
If it's not the tranny it could be a brake issue... The e-brake cable could be seized in the rear... More info on what's happening would be helpful. |

he would know if its the brakes seizing when he gets out from a decent trip and can smell burnt brakes

A simple test for tranny issues would be to hold the rpms at about 3000 rpms in drive. This would build up pressure in the trans. If a) the car doesn't move or b) the car jerks or lunges forward in a sporadic attempt to move forward, the problem is tranny, no boubt IMO. If it's not tranny, I would have no idea what is going on--I don't think anything could cause that if the engine is running smoothly.

he never said the car moves, and if this is the case, he would not know whether or not the rear brakes are seized, however I believe very strongly that this is a trans issue...

True, so to add to my list: c) if you stomp on the gas and one tire spins and you don't move forward, your other brake is seized. If you rev the engine in drive and it seems to be 'working' yet doesn't move the car at all, both could be seized.... Raise the rear end and try to spin both tires with you hand... Both wheels should spin easy, especially with an open diff.

Sounds like the tranny prob I had with one of my old daily drivers. When the car was cold you could hit the gas and nothing, then all of a sudden it would take off. Shortly after I had a really hard downshift (thunking) from 2nd down to 1st. I didn't need a whole new tranny but it was leaking. I had the solenoid replaced and maybe some hoses, also had the trans flushed & filled. It has been fine since then, so far so good since last Jan anyway. Check the trans fluid.
