this was weird as hell...

my negative post battery clamp was worn out and i needed to replace it so my friend hooked me up with one cause im a cheap ass and i didnt put it on right away...i get to my apartment complex..get out..check the mail..get back in and my car doesnt start..so i reposition the clamp and the light pop back on so i try to start and it doesnt even turn over..lights just instantly went out..so i fucked with it some more and got it to turn over but then the car died on its over before i even put it in gear...the weird thing was...when i turned the key on but engine off the next time the RPM's were going crazy just bouncing everywhere...i fixed the clamp and it runs fine im just curious on what could make the rpm's just like that...i mean the crank sensor makes its owns voltage and the battery wasnt even giving power the anything anyway....but yea i was just wondering.thanks guys

alternator had stored energy that wasnt cycled so the car essentially had a slight short when the battery couldnt accept the incoming voltage so your car freaked a little.

Whenever the battery is disconnected the computer resets itself, when it does this and you first go to start up the car the guages recalibrate themselves. When they do that they go all the way up and then back down, you probably didnt give them enough time to recalibrate, you where probably taking your key out too fast so it kept doing it.

It sounds like a bad ground caused the problems. It could cause lots of things to happen including burning up the wiring harness. Try to avoid this in the future!

This is prolly a much more probable cause than a ground, however either could do this.
