you can do both

i always found it easier to do it from the bottom (Cradle)

4 bolts on the K Member, remove the strut bolts, a few conections an hoses then drop it down

Engine hoist it comes right out...

Bottom seems like a lot of extra work for nothing.

un bolt the tranny mount
then the tranny
disconnect the fuel line
disconnect your wiring harness or all your sensors
take off your radiator hoses
then the 2 heater hoses in the back
remove exhuast or headers at least

un-do vacuum lines
unbolt your starter
unbolt your grounds
unbolt your motor mounts--(1 22mm bolt on each) or 21mm

then with a hoist lift her up slowly

It's not clear if you are leaving the trans in place. It is supposed to be possible to remove all the engine to trans bolts and the 4 torque convertor nuts, then remove all the wires, hoses, motor mount nuts etc and lift it out with the trans still bolted up. The engine would have to come forward slightly (maybe 1") to clear the torque convertor studs. The radiator doesn't need to be removed.

If you plan to R&R the engine and rebuild an engine, I would recommend that you buy the Ford shop manual from Helm publications. It has detailed step by step instructions and the correct technical information.

good thing you got 3 cars. when i took my first engine out i worked on it day and night all over one weekend. just start takin stuff apart make sure you label everything. get a haynes or chiltons manual and do some research. Best way to learn is to do it yourself.

BS in a manual tranny its 10 times easier to remove and install with the motor installed
took me 10min to unbolt and remove the tranny by MYSELF
with a buddy to lift it on the ground it takes another 10min to bolt it up

and i never said anything about removing the radiator?

in an auto its different but in a manual tranny your nuts if your going to waste time fishing it out engine and tranny together
i garuntee it takes twice as long
between finding the right angle
moving the hoist with the engine alone it can be a little hard to move it let alone another 80-120lbs
then angle it out with out hitting anything

plus when its out and on the hoist its going to take longer unbolting the tranny then working the last few bolts while holding

ESPECIALLY if this motor is going to sit on an engine stand

if you unbolt the tranny and use u-joints and manuver the tranny and motor up and down unbolting the bellhousing is a breeze

take a tranny out of a viper and then take a tranny out of our v6 mustangs. see how a v6 mustang is like eating cake vs most cars

what do you mean leaving it in place? in the car? you cant with out the motor
and if you mean the motor thats pointless because its a motor swap anyway

all wires, hoses(auto only) have to be removed no matter what when removing the tranny

when you remove a motor the tranny it not staying in place with out destroying the tranny mount and it laying on the floor

If you support the transmission with a jack (preferably a trans jack) it can stay in the car. When I did mine I removed the transmission then the engine. However, the shop manual procedure does recommend leaving the transmission in the car supported by a jack.

I agree with your comment that it would be difficult to remove the engine and transmission together from the top. In that case I think it would be easier to lower it out from under the car together with the cross member.

There certainly is more than one way to do this.
