WTF (alternator pulley nut)


How hard is it to get that damn alternator pulley nut off? I tried with an electric impact wrench and a small air compressor for the numatic one im going over to a friends tomorrow to use his big air compressor. But any other suprises i should be looking out for?

The one time I had to get one off I took it to an auto repair shop and they removed the nut with an impact wrench. Hopefully the larger compressor will do it.

Possibly a strap or chain wrench and a socket and breaker bar might work as well.

ive done it with an electric impact
a towel and your hand hold the pulley and zap it off
OR
use the belt to hold it from moving...

when taking off anything with a pulley on it, its best to loosen the nuts while the belt is still on to prevent slippage.. once the nut is loosened then take the belt off and continue to take off the nut

no, you only need it for the crank pulley (assuming you're talking about UDP's). the alt. pulley comes right off...

Getting the damn nut loose is the problem i know to keep the belt on when loosening it

Tried it and the pulley will just spin even if the belt is stoped, liiks like as if it was slipping but its not

spray it with some wd-40, then hit it again...
if all else fails, take the alternator off the car, and drive up to Advance or something and ask them to take it off...

use a wrench put it on the nut and beat it with a hammer, or have one guy hold the pulley with a towel and use an impact wrench

PB Blaster owns all...

Tranny fluid (ATF) works good to loosen and or remove rust too...
