tranny fluid
I heard from some people that it maybe a bad thing if you change your transmission fluid i was wondering what all of your input maybe on this. Is it a good or bad idea to change your tranny fluid, and also how often should you change it?

you may have been lucky
it also depends on the tranny to if you have any sludge or build up in the tranny thats covering or blocking a leak changing the fluid will remove that sludge at start up and thats when you'll have issues.

it's $100 everywhere around here. you can do it yourself- it's just not as easy as changing the oil.

I would recommend changing the fluid at 30K mile intervals.
You need to remove the transmission pan and you should also remove the drain plug in the torque converter. That way you get most of the fluid out. It takes about 10 qts to refill so your talking about ~$50 for Ford fluid. I recommend buying the fluid from Ford. I've found it works noticeably better than aftermarket fluid. Some people say there can be a problem with changing the fluid if it hasn't been done regularly, that it could dislodge sludge and cause problems. I don't know what the basis of that is, but I would recommend changing the fluid regularly from the beginning to avoid that problem. |

I'm not sure what the capacity is for a totally dry system, but after a drain and fill including the torque converter, I found it took somewhere between 10 and 12. I would buy a case of it (12 qts). Even draining everything as best you can there is still some old fluid left. Transmission shops have equipment to do a more complete flush.

shop told me 13qts when they did mine.
you can drain the pan, then put the pan back on, and disconnect the hose that runs tranny fluid FROM the tranny TO the radiator and crank up the car, but AS SOON as that hose stops spitting fluid you should cut the engine. as far as i know that's the best way to do it yourself.
