IRS 03 cobra

So i went and got my bottle filled at the shop i always go to im friends with the guy who owns the shop.. any way he said he could sell me an IRS off an 03 cobra for $900 installed. It has 3.73 gears in it already he said the hole thing rotors and everything else. Is this a good deal and whats so good about IRS i have no idea so if someone could explain it to me and if its a good price let me know??

THanks

If you want to go in a straight line, nothing is good about it.

you would gain better handling characteristics from an IRS but it is weaker than a 8.8'' rear. i put an 8.8'' in mine and havent had any problems, and i doubt i ever will

well it would be stronger than the 7.5 thats in mine now plus i will be getting gears out of it. I wanted gears but did not want to build the 7.5 up incase its gonna break soon.

as in the irs is bad for drag racing. its a rear end thats made for handling and such, not straight line performance. if youre gonna be a dd and drag racing car than youll wanna go wit a solid 8.8" rear end not an irs rear

its definetly a good deal at that price, but you need to determine what your plans for the future are. if you hit the drag strip alot, its a complete waste of money imo.

well i dont hit the strip that much maybe once a month?? if that but i just wanted to do gears soon and i dont want to put gears in the 7.5 thats just going to end up breaking so id rather get a new rear end and then gears but with this deal im getting a two in 1

Then wait till you break the 7.5 and have an 8.8 solid axle waiting. IRS(independent rear suspension) is great for auto-x and such because each wheel can move up and down independently. Now, in drag, that independance will only take away from the traction you want to get. Simple physics really...

you have a v6... irs will not break any time soon with a v6... when you have high hp (500+ is what i commonly hear) you start having problems with wheel hop and snapping an axle shaft... i bet you will be fine for years to come.. do it and get it over with.

its not a bad price and you would see some gains from it unless your pushing over a 150 shot your not going to have any of the wheel hopp and unstable launch problems cobras do
