Average RPM's?

OK, so I noticed while riding with a good friend of mine (he has a 98 V6) that his RPM's were only at about 1200 at 55mph, and they only went up to about 1700 at 70mph. Of course if he accelerates quickly they will jump to redline, but driving at a steady speed they seem so low! In my 2003 the rpms are usually 500 higher then his. about 1600-1700 at 55mph about about 2000-2200 around 70-75. What is the cause of this, and who has normal rpm's? we haven't noticed us doing anything different while driving that would effect the rpms like that. I know with his car being that year, he only has a single port engine, but i didn't think that was the cause. And if anyone has any suggestions on how to get lower rpm's while driving at a steady speed please let me know.

BTW, both of our cars are stock performance wise as far as we know.
Thanks!

He has 2.73 gears... you have 3.27 gears.

You said the following:

Him = 1700rpm @ 70mph
You = 2000rpm @ 70mph

(1700rpm) / (2.73) X (3.27) = 2036rpm

I see, that makes sense, lol. I didn't think about different gears. So if I bought 4.10 gears, then I would have even higher rpms? Thanks for your help everyone, that has annoyed me for the past week or so!

Yes, given that the gear you're in and the speed are the same, your RPMs would be much higher with 4.10's.
