Gears and Exhaust

Ok so for my v6 im gonna get some mac LT's o/r H pipe and some flos.(No cats). By getting this setup would I lose enough low end power where I would need to swap out my gears? If so, would the 3.73's or 4.10's be better. And since i don't really know what im doing would it be best to take it to a shop to have them put them in or can i figure it out myself. BTW, still dont have my car yet but it would be somethin like an 00-03, and not sure what type of trans yet. depends on whats available when I can buy it.
Thanks

gears 3.73 for manual 4.10 for automatic while your at it add a t-lock.

If you haven't bought a car yet go ahead and just buy yourself a gt,4v, or fox, unless you are one of very few who want a turbo/supercharged 6er beast. You get alot more bang for your buck with those options (gt not as much but at least a better sound)

if you dont wanna lose alotta low end power, just go wit longtube headers, o/r h pipe and a gt take off catback w/ weld-in mufflers. you wont lose low end power and youll have nice gains all around

i have:

mac long tubes
off roach H
magnapacks
frpp 4.10s
frpp t-lok

basically, i know what's up.

you wont lose low end power, and if your powerband moves higher in the rpms, you can take advantage of that through a steeper gear ratio. i cut .5 off my 1/4 time with the gears/t-lok alone.

you want a shop to install. rates go anywhere from 150-400 depending on location.

i would get an auto tranny. the 4r70w is a very strong transmission and can be tuned easily for harder shifts at whatever MPH you want via a tuner.

i shortened my 1st gear by 7mph, raised the rev limiter to 6k rpms, and firmed my shifts by 25%, and with the mods listed, and on drag radials, ran a 14.79 at 92 mph. stock, these cars run high 15s, low 16s...

gas mileage and insurance are really not much different between v8 and v6. Get quotes for the v8 insurance before you decide for sure to buy a 6

the insurance is the only reason i got the v6 when i did. for me, it was 300/month for comp for a 99 gt, and it was 120/month for comp for a 99 v6... so 150/month is mod money. i never spent more than to break even with a gt on my car. and now i am still saving money against the gt with what i have that runs gt's in the 1/4

I understand what you mean, and i'm not putting down the 6 at all, I'm just saying that the majority of people with 6ers don't want to put forth time/money/effort to make a 6 even with a gt when they can just get a gt and pay 100 or a little more extra a month. I mean alot of the guys here with semi-stock 8's are 6ers who decided it was a better choice for them. Just showing the guy his options based on his plans. If he wants to go ahead and mod the hell out of a 6 like alot of people in this forum he should get a six but if he wants to have gears/exhaust I would say an 8 is a better choice.

You can find 99 - 04 GTs for not alot at all. Insurance wouldnt be that much more either because they would be 5 years old at least. Gas mileage isnt that big either. Think it through man.

definatly consider an 8 before you get a 6. not much mpg difference, but you'll have more fun.

Don't just assume that the insurance on a GT will be insane, there are lots of cases where it's only a few bucks more a month. Call your company and get a quote. I checked after I bought my 6er, and I was told it would be a $20/month difference - which is completely worth it to me. Even modded these 6ers will leave you wishing you were as fast as a minivan.

was the v6 newer than the gt? that plays a bigger role sometimes than the engine alone.

you will be fine. your back pressure wont matter that much because your losses will be hardly noticeable. might i suggest getting a tuner too?

that was a very shitty comment. gears are amazing and probly the biggest difference youll ever feel in your sixer. and for only ~$300 to install its more thn worth it

Thanks for all the comments. I have been gone for 4 days so couldnt reply...
The biggest hurdle for me getting a GT is convincing parental units. They think im gonna die or somethin i dunno. If any of you guys were succesfull at getting your parents to buy you a fast first car let me know how to do it. As for gears, I'll probably get them sometime after i get my exhaust if i have the extra money. But for now i just gotta focus on getting a car lol. Hopefully a GT
