I saw a diesel at the sema show (maybe a nova or something like that, can't remember) and it had 1700hp and got 27mpg.

I am about 90% sure thats fake. That vette belongs to one of the 1320 guys and i have seen more recent vids where it wasn't a diesel.

Fuck that. Diesels are awesome. More power too these guys... Let remember what Caroll Shelby said about torque. Plus, in the prototype class of LeMans racing deisels rule the roost. Porsche, Audi and one other that I can't remember all run diesels and they are WAY out in front of the competition.
