Ive never painted one before, but i would think i would want it taken apart to paint it. I would be afraid of overspray getting on something it shouldt be on.

That's what I thought.... The only thing I could think of w/o ripping it apart would be if there was a brush on paint. Is there such a thing?

It's gonna look like crap if you brush paint it, plus, you need to prep it right for the paint to stay on and not start flaking off. That would be F'ed up if it started flaking and fell into your Alt!
If you really want to color it I would take it to a rebuilder and have him take it apart for you unless you have the tools to put it back together correctly without jacking up the rear bearings. Then you can send it to a powder coater and get it done right. While it's off you may as well take your grinder and smooth all the casting flash too. That would look sweet!

+1 on powder over paint. i'm personally looking into a home kit rather than paying someone else to do it for me though. the biggest thing is an oven to cook the powder on your parts and i already have a full sized oven i can dedicate to just powder. for the smaller things you can use a convection oven....aka a toaster oven. (not a toaster)

It's not that hard, I have done it more than once. They are not as fragile as people make them sound. Heck they get water on them, salt on them, antifreeze sometimes.
Just take it off & clean it up using a good stiff brush & some compressed air. If yours is really dirty, then before you remove it. Take it to the car wash & pressure wash it.

When you have it dry & clean, tape off the the holes where you can see the wire windings & tape off where the wires connect to it. Then spray on a coat of primer that is for use on non ferris metals. Wait 15 min, then spray with your choice of color of engine enamel. 2-3 coats should have it looking good. Then for added protection I use a couple coats of clear. Pull the tape as soon as it is dry tp the touch. Wait a full day or more before installing it.

here you go if you want any kind of info on powder. this is the best i've dug up.

do it yourself powder coat home powder coating
this one doesn't use an air compressor. i'm really not sure what the benifit is to either setup or how good one will be over the other. the ease for this will be if you don't have a compressor and want to get into doing it cheap this would work to start off.

Eastwood Co. - Elite HotCoat® Powder Coating Kit
this is a nicer kit that support you after you learn the trade a little better. you'll be able to have nicer work with this kit. you will however need an air compressor. a small one will work and can be picked up pretty cheap. look at pawn shops or the classifieds.

I dont think brushing any paint will look very good, cuase you'll see the brush strokes in it.

I wish i had a hotcoat system

total cost to get into one would be about 300 bucks if you bought a small compressor and covection oven both used.

2 questions, how hard is it to take apart the alternator w/o screwing it up and for baking the powdercoat it can be done in a regular oven? I have a big air compressor so that second kit is looking pretty good...

As long as you have the proper puller for the pullie. You will be fine.
It will also have to be pressed back on.

On a 1-10 scale what are the chances somethings going to get broken? What pullie? It's already off btw.

Um the pullie that spins the alternator..
The biggest risk for damage will be removing & installing the pullie.

I was almost sold on getting one but I read a bunch of reviews that said they were crap so.... Dunno. I might be spraying it down with engine enamel or something.

you CANNOT powder coat in the same oven you cook food in. it must be an oven dedicated only to the use for baking the powdered products

you can buy colored alternators, and for the amount of time and angiush spent on painting yours you could have just bought one.
