Paint

My paint on my 1997 GT is wearing off pretty fast. So I've been looking at different types of paint. The one paint I've noticed is "mystic" paint. Does anyone know of a site that has this type of paint?

You can't just buy the "Mystichrome" paint like Ford used on the 96 & 04 Cobra's. If that's what you're talking about. Ford just won't give you that paint. You have to own a Mystichrome. They'll ask you for your vin number to prove you own one.

yeah the original paint used on the mystic cobra is not available to the general public but there are companies that make a paint very similar i would try PPG or shermin williams and it is sprayed on just like any other paint just more layers

Try to find someone who has a mystichrome and have them order the paint. There's plenty of people who I'm sure could help you out.

So i did some looking around and this is what i have found out

with a 96 cobra painted with Mysticpaint, if you want paint, you have to own the cobra and have to need repairs. Ford will send someone to look at it and detemine how much paint you need, then they will take any left over paint you have.

The 04, painted with Mystichrome. is a different color than the 96 and anyone can get this color. The paint code is G7 and the PPG paint code is 903070

Now on spraying it. There isnt a big secret way with painting this color, it just has one extra step in it. You would start by doing the normal process of painting a car black. When you get to the point that the black basecoat is on, you will want to spray the Mystichrome paint in 2-4 medium coats. That is the same for all the color-shifting paints, it always goes basecoat, special coat, clear coat. You just want to be sure the black finish is flawless, because the mystichrome will magnify every little piece of dirt or trash underneath it.

The cool thing about this type of paint is the basecoat determines the final colors. For example I had
gotten ahold of some of the 04 paint that was left over from a car at my work at the time. I just had enough to play around with, not enough to paint anything major. One of the things i painted was a cell phone case for a buddy. I Painted it all black first, but then painted skulls and faces on it with white paint. Then i sprayed the mystichrome over it all. When i was finished it looked like there was skulls painted with another color of mystichrome ontop of the original mystichrome. So there really is endless color combinations possible.

The reason it does that is because paints like that are kinda translucent, so whatever color, or colors, you spray it them over will determine what the final color is.
