Zatrekaz's Interior Blackout Project

I decided to follow WLjohnson in the project of blacking out mu Interior. I will be posting progress and pics here over the coming weeks. I am starting out with the small pieces right now and working my way to the big dash on the week of Spring Break.

So far I have done my driver and passanger quarter panels and door runners (I dont know the name). I am using Dupli-Color Black Vinyl & Fabric, Kyrton Fusion Black, and Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter.

In my other post I have been painting my interior pieces red also. I started to paint my Optima Battery today as well.

Pics of the progress of blackout coming later tonight.

Thanks for all the responses. I was hoping to get a good bit more done this weekend, however it seems its going to rain

Which also means I can't do my Valve Covers red...

Something I noticed was that the hard plastic pieces come out a lot darker than the soft vinyl pieces. I wonder if its the paint, or the material

Lookin' good so far, I have all the small pieces painted to match the exterior, I love that look it adds that certain something to the mostly dull interior.

Yep, the rain is here. I was installing my new Sirius unit and BOOM came the downpour. So, No more interior progress for this weekend and no value cover work either.... SIGH.

Looks like I will be getting a few pieces done next week and the value covers next weekend.

Got my first problem to figure out now. My door runners are chipping. They are the pieces you step over getting in and out. I just used the Vinyl paint on them and belive the fix will be Krylon Fusion + Adhesion promotor + clear... anything else thats good to resist chipping on a hard surface?

that man, i would just look at replacing... along with the kick panels, they get hit alot.. so there is really no way to prevent them from chipping.. fortunately they are not very expensive on ebay.

The only way I could gaurantee that they wouldnt chip would be to sand it all with some 600 grit sandpaper, and use automotive grade primer base and clear. But I know your doing it with rattle can so that option is out. But If you would sand and prime the plastic before painting it, you will have ALOT better chance of the paint not chipping.

Another tip about painting raw plastic is to heat it up some before your initial cleaning, and sometimes it will "sweat" any residule release agent to the surface where it can be cleaned off.

I painted my valve covers blue and I sanded it down to bare metal and then sprayed the whole thing down with a self-etching metal primer, Then a high-temp acrylic Paint such as caliper paint. Although the valve covers shouldn't heat up nearly enough to baked the paint off. But better safe than sorry.

A good primer will help to prevent chipping on plastics.
However for the difference in color you are experiencing, use the same color primer as a first coat, then put the black on and it should come out a lot closer in color.
Also for painting with color, and you want the red to be darker use a darker primer. If you want a full vibrant red, try using white under
the color first and it will just scream sexiness.
Take a piece of plastic and do half in white primer and the other half with black primer, then cover in color see the difference for yourself.

2/23/09 Update:

Got some more work done today. I was removing my seats getting ready to do my Rear Seat Delete and decided to grab the back panels (my rear seat area is bare atm Lol). I only got the Driver side done, and will be all I get done until this weekend due to money restraints. I hate starting a project and running out of materials/money

I sanded these pieces down with 800grit sandpaper just to get them scuffed up, sprayed it down with adhesion promoter, then used the black. One piece has a layer of Krylon Fusion while the other is Vinyl & Fabric. I really can no tell a difference between the two paints. Once they dry I will see how easy each chips since I sanded a bit and used adhesion.

Pics....
