I have a question about paint...

I wanna repaint my car and have Mach 1 racing stripes painted on. But I don't want it painted over what I have now. I want all of the current paint taken off down to the bare metal, taken apart and have it painted again. What kind of service is that called? Also, anyone in in Houston or in the Golden Triangle know where i can get this done? >_>

+1
The metal is dipped in an anti-corrosive coating at the factory, prior to painting. If you truely strip down to the metal, you would also open the door for possible corrosion issues later.
A good paint shop shouls be able to work with what you have, use light sanding and primers to get a new coat that sticks well and looks right. Your best bet is to find a few shops and talk to them about the process.
Older cars doing a frame-off restoration often strip down/sand to the metal, but that is usually to addresss issues that have developed over time, smooth out patched areas/bondo, on a car that may not have had good corrosion prevention in the first place and has seen the effects of time and wear.

I believe any paint shop can do that for you, just don't let your car on the first shop you see just cuz you find it first, get different quotes, check on Google for shops near you.....

+1 on don't strip to bare metal, also although the o/p didn't really mention changing color's, but to do it right on these cars would be cost prohibitive as EVERY part of the car is supposed to be body color (under the hood, under the car, basicaly like I said EVERYWHERE) & to do it right would require pulling the eng,/drivetain/wiring/etc. diffrent color's under the hood/car looks rediculous,

hey guys, I have a simular question. I have a 69'r fastback at the house. needs alot of work. would it be wise to go bear metal in sections. like quater panals .. fix it, get it back in primer .. then do something else systematically? instead of takling the whole car to metal first? or am i wrong?

I am located not far from you. I do paint work on my days off. I have 14 days off in a row every month. I could probably do the job for you cheaper than most. PM me if you are interested in getting it done. We get alot of our supplies out of Beaumont, RM store, they deliver to DeRidder.

I done a complete color change on this car, which it is mine. I don't do complete color swap jobs regularly, they take to long to do. Alot of work to get it done right. This is what it looked like before I painted it.

I took mine straight to bare metal with 0 problems almost 4 years ago.

Of course I didn't use cheap products by any means either.

We took it down to bare metal ourselves and it wasn't that expensive.

We just used that paint remover. Don't even remember what its called but boy does it destroy paint and peel it off in a hurry. Its fairly easy to do.

We had one of my dads friends paint my car for free in exchange for work at his house.

Paint and tape for my car came to $1200. Rediculous IMO. But I didn't make those decisions.

Now I got to get a hood, front bumper and back bumper and repaint all this shit over again due to hitting things such as trailer hitch's, deer and walls lol.

When you/if you go down to bare metal use a paintbrush and I'll try to find the product I used to do it.

You just literally paint it on there and watch it destroy your paint and take a putty knife to scrape it all off.

EDIT - if you have to do fiberglass your arm is gonna hurt like a mofo when you get done rubbing all that stuff off .

Mine has gray something or other on it + clear + black primer.

The guy that did it was an insurance guy but used to do bodywork. And he couldn't use anything but expensive stuff. (retarded IMO)

Also the guy was a perfectionist so he did it over and over and over. (sanding) I thought I was gonna pull my hair out.

EDIT - I still need to write the mustang from hell story. Add the fact I hit a deer today with it.
