from my years of working in body shops & custom hot rod shops i've seen "the good, the bad, & the ugly" from them.... if you do all your own bodywork & prep the car right where all they need to do is scuff the primer up & paint.... now if you just take it to them with no body work done expect to get it back that way only with a shit coat of paint over top of the dents, old scratches & rust.. they really do no body work & thats how they can turn cars very quickly since bodywork is 90% of the paint job..

the guys that spray the cars ARE exceptional painters though, they paint 10-15 cars a day, so if you have straight bodywork & it's prepped right the paint will come out fairly decent for a driver.. it will not be show quality at all! ya get what you pay for!

if you can hold off & save up around 2000-3000 bucks & go to a real body shop to do the bodywork & paint i highly reccomend it.. it will come out 100 times better if you do that.. i would hate to see you come back to the forums & tell us how bad the maaco job looks!! save up the cash & get it all done right, i know it's a little bit pricey but you get what you pay for!!!!

+1 On doing your own bodywork and prep. They are paid to paint the car not to PREPARE and paint. But yeah I had a older fox body and i did all my own prep work and just had they scuff and paint and it turned you pretty nice considering the price.

oh pimping.. thats a good idea... lol you're smart... now... to find a body shop.. i don't really have a lot of dents or anything... there is just a lot of chips in my paint and there are places where the paint is starting to flake off... it bothers me a lot.. lol

paint

Chips and pealing paint isnt bad. They will sand it down anyway which will get rid of them.. at least some. My friend took his car to macco and it came out real good... and it was a dark red too.. However we did remove all the moldings weather strips, taillights and little crap that they would get paint on... ITs been 1 1/2 years and still looking good. But if you come to NY, I will hook you up I know peps here with good body shops :wink

How would you like them shipped Overnight or 3-5 day standard???? lol

It all depends on the shop some will take them off some will tape them... If i was you i would remove some of the obvious things like lights...5.0 emblem and little things that they wouldnt think of.. I hope this helps

the way to paint a car correctly is to remove the lights, weatherstripping & moldings & emblems... maaco will do none of that... here is what you can do for prepping your car by yourself, & trust me, you can do this!!

ok, first step is to just tape off your lights, windows & weatherstripping.. when you sand your car you do not want to hit any of these with sandpaper. go to napa or whatever & buy a big pack of 600 grit paper & 1000 grit paper, a little black rubber sanding block (ask them & they will point you in the right direction!), and a bottle of cheap car wash soap....

the next thing to do when you get back home is to get a bucket & soak a few sheets of 600 grit paper in the bucket w/ the carwash soap & warm water. take a sheet of paper fold it over the block, get the hose out. start sanding wherever you want to start. do not sand in circles!! try to sand in straight lines & king of sand diagnolly... make sure that when you are sanding you are using the hose to provide a constant stream of water over the area where you are sanding. do not apply lots of pressure, let the paper do the work & DO NOT SAND THROUGH THE PAINT TO THE PRIMER!!! sand the whole car down with a constant stream of water over your area. this is important because it will help keep your sandpaper from getting clogged & make it way easier to sand down. make sure you scuff the entire car down to where the paint looks dull when it's dry. anywhere that isn't scuffed down really good is an area where paint wont stick.....

when you are done sanding the car down with 600 give the car a good wash dry it off & look for any spots that you missed.. if you missed spots just go back over them with the 600 grit. after you hit the missed spots wash again to make sure you didn't miss anything else..

after that, get out your 1000 grit paper & do the same thing over the entire car... make sure you dont miss any spots with the 1000 grit & always keep water running over the areas that you are sanding.. make sure that everything is sanded down really nice.. it will look completely dull & you shouldn't see any shiney spots, if you do hit those spots again.. just make sure that you DO NOT sand through to the primer or bare metal!!.

when you take it into maaco make sure that you take out your tailliignts/headlights/emblems before you hand it over to paint & it should turn out well.. i know this all sounds like a lot of shit to take in but it really is easy! i have my girfriend & my mom out helping me do my mustang before i sprayed the car at the old body shop i worked at!

you can either do all of this, or just date a guy that works at a body shop treat him real good, get him to do the paint & bodywork & then dump him like a sack of potatos when he finishes!

Macco sucks, my friend did all the body work to his car, had them paint it, and every couple of months the paint would peel, he had to go back over 5 times to have the re-fix it, granite it was free from the warantee, but still, paint shouldn't peel
