of course they look the same...55w's wash out the color of their bulbs...so your 10k should look around 7-8k

ballasts are the first thing to swap. honestly i don't know about the bulbs...i've swapped before without issue, but i don't know if changing between the two lowers the life of the bulbs

You don't have to swap your bulbs out, but your standard bulb is going to color shift a bit quicker with 55w ballasts. That said in this case quicker is in about 2 - 3 years instead of 3 - 4 years.
