Rust?
When I bought my Mustang I knew the kid who owned it before didn't take car of it. I hadn't washed it since I bought it a few weeks ago but today I had plenty of free time so I gave it a bath and a good cleaning inside. On the outside I found it was worse than I expected. Aside from lots of non-matching touch-up paint I found this:
![]() I was able to get a few spots off with my finger nail but most of them seem to be there to stay. It looks to me like rust. What are my options for having this redone (hopefully in the spring)? Will simply having it repainted take car of it or am I going to need to replace all the panels that have spots like this? Also, it's not just an isolated patch or two. Both doors are sufficiently speckled with these spots to the point that's it's bothering me. |

Are they pitted or just surface rust specs? I wouldnt do a store-bought touch up. You can get a metal pad at any Ace Hardware (its rust colored..irony) and very pliable (like a scotch pad). Do each one.
Get your paint computer matched and get a bottle of custom made touch up ...and touch up. But where are these popping up?

looks like surface rust, just sand and prime then repaint, to do the whole car, if you sand and prime probably 3000ish

These are popping up mostly on the doors. I ran my finger over a few of them and they're not pitted so I'm assuming they're surface rust. I don't think I'll bother with getting touch up paint made. I have a few pieces of the body that need to be replaced then I know a guy who works at a body shop that's willing to paint it for me (he'll charge obviously, but he'll give me a break).
So one more question. What causes surface rust? |
