painting

okay, so i'm gonna be either putting on my shaker or putting on a cowl hood. i am also repainting a bumper which is white.

how much of a PITA will it be to paint them myself? my dad has a spray gun, but i'm wondering if i should waste my money on paint or just have a painter do it? i've been wanting to learn how to paint myself anyways, so it would be a learning experience, i just don't want to spend $300 on paint and mess it up.

fwiw i have no idea what all i'd need to paint it as far as how much paint and clear to use. my paint code is k7, bright atlantic blue.

Im going to have to say take it to the shop for this one. The reason I say that is because there is a bumper cover involved. You could paint them if you really wanted to and had the patience. But I would not recommend learning to paint on a bumper cover. Its just that they are shaped kinda wierd with fog light holes and openings, and it will be very easy for you to get really bad runs in your clear where all the "holes" are just because you dont have any experience spraying paint. Imo painting a bumper cover as one of your first things would be counterproductive to learning how to paint. Because you will get runs and get frustrated and whatnot. It took alot of spraying time to be able to paint a bumper cover, have a smooth surface, and not run it. I remember the first few bumper covers i painted i hated, because i was always getting runs and i would have to redo them. And I would also recommend not learning to paint on a hood with your color of blue, because it will be easy to tiger stripe(light and dark stripes) the basecoat if you dont have good gun control. I would say someone should learn to paint with a solid color imo.

Also, with getting a new hood and bumper, you might want to consider getting your fenders blended.

Well thats good to see you are prob gonna get the fenders blended. You will be way more pleased. Ive seen ALOT of people not go with the blending, only to regret it, and have to end up paying more to have the fenders blended, then what it would have originally cost if they wouldve just blended them in the first place.

Yeah those bumper covers can be a pita sometimes, I think its great that you want to learn to paint, and ill help you all i can if you really wanna do it. I just think it would be better to let a shop do it since its a bumper and with what i said about striping the hood.

If i can get decent video with my phone wrapped in plastic inside the booth, i will video me painting my cowl hood when i get it. That way you guys can have a little visual examples of the gun control stuff i keep talking about. Maybe i can even video getting the gun set up and all.

Ahhhh dreams..........I cant wait till i can get my cowl hood!!!
