How to properly sand a bumper...?

Alright so i'm wanting to replace my front bumper and side skirt. I have a few different bumpers im looking at, but they are both painted already. Do i just get a really fine sand paper and sand them down really nice (to save money) before taking it to get it repainted?

Not really fine paper. I guess you could scuff the he'll out of it with scotchbrite but it's best to strip it all down. Good question though as I need to know as well.

grey or red scuff pad. Depends on the color of the car. Or a da with interface pad and 600 or 800 staying off the edges then hit the edges with the scuff pad.

You really arent gonna save that much money though if any...I still dont get where people get this stuff that if they prep the part itll save all kinds of money. Prep work is included in paint time. Not only that generally speaking wiping it with wax and grease remover, anti static, and tacking it off is considered prep...which is done right before its painted not by someone at their house before taking it somewhere so youre still gonna foot some money one way or the other.

Not only that if its a shop that does good work and has a good reputation theyre still gonna go back over your work for a few reasons.

1. to make sure its right
2. so if its not right, and they spray it, and theres sand scratches etc you cant blame it on them and throw a fit
3. if 2 happens, their reputation isnt on the line because of someone elses mistake

all that needs to be done is scuff up the surface of the clear coat so the new paint can stick

^ , stripping shit down is actually worse than not stripping it given its the oem paint and it is still good.

One of the front bumpers i'm looking at is a black one off an 04 GT and then the other is a "burnt orange" 01 cobra bumper.

Yes have the shop do it. And what you scuff it with depends on the color of your car/color it will be painted not the color of the part. Metallics etc youll want to use a grey bad, white and colors that hide shit well you can get away with a red.

Ooohh gotcha. Thanks! How much do you think it'd cost to get a front bumper painted? I've never dealt with anything on my car getting painted.

I've been quoted between $300 and $600 for a good job, actually in the market to get my front bumper repainted too.

If there were sand scratches in it they'd probably just throw a primer/sealer on there and go back over it and smooth it all out.

I'd say that unless you're going to spray the bumpers yourself, don't do the prep work yourself. Like AJM said the shop will just re-do what you did anyway. If you want to spray it yourself, then I'd hit it with about 800 grit on a dual action (DA) sander just to cut through and smooth out the clear. Then I'd primer it, wetsand like crazy w/ 1500 then shoot base/clear and wetsand w/ 2000 and buff/polish

My brother in law hooks me up and he quoted me $250 to repaint a hood. Hood and bumper probably take the same amount of work, but the hood probably uses a tad more paint. Not enough to make a big price difference though. I'm going to try my hand at respraying my own hood though. We re-did my Demon a few years back and that turned out pretty nice!

Well the 01 bumper is definitely going to look better. If you hook me up with the 01 bumper I'll hook you up with a paint job on the 04 gt bumper
