Question

Rim painting

Im thinking about painting my rims. I have my origanals on the car right now and I have GT rims in the shed. Looking to paint the GT wheels (I believe they are polished) black. Any tips to spare?

Plus the nearest powdercoat-er is about 200 miles away and he gave me an estimate of 1500 dollars and it would take a month... I could buy 3 new sets of black rims for that...

i painted mine until i can afford powdercoat...

i used a scotch bright pad for scuffing...(clean them first)...i used high temp semi gloss black so the heat from braking wouldn't make the paint bubble down the road (just in case)....wet sand and clear coat

The clear coat is good but im going to take a drill with the wire cup brush (forgot the actual name) and scuff them up real good, sand the hard to get spots with around a 200 grit, prime, 2-3 coats semi-gloss high temp paint, and clear. Vwa-la.

Where at in OKC? and how much?

If the clear coat is still good, I don't think your goal is to get down to the metal. I think what you want to do is just scuff up the clear so that it'll give the new primer something to grab onto. I'll let Travis verify/deny that, but I don't think you want to sand it all the way down to the metal and have to scuff that up too.

no man, if the clear coat is in good condition, just scuff it up really good with 3m red scotchbrite, and paint right over that. If you take a wire brush to your aluminum wheels you are going to make nasty scratches in them, aluminum is pretty soft. And the scotch brite will make it really easy to get into the hard to reach areas.

that's probly because my wheels are paint GT wheels lolz...btw..if you want to run center caps you'll need shorter lugs then the v6 wheels have...ask me how i know

btw...i'm doing the stripe too, but my friends cutting mine in vinyl instead of paint...so i can redo it easily if i have to repaint down the road
