A Few Exterior Changes

Just a few little things I did last night/this afternoon..

Side markers tinted

Pony corral painted white and pony tinted

I found with the VHT Nite Shades it goes on fairly speckly until it gets enough layers to be really dark. Is that what it usually does or should I slow down my passes over the things I'm painting? Want to do the tail lights but I don't want them black

Edit: Ended up tinting my tail lights after all. Didn't go real dark because I'd rather pull them off some other time and make them darker than try to take layers off. So I'm fairly pleased with how they turned out, a tad darker would be nice though.

Also got rid of the dealer sticker to give the rear a cleaner look

I think I ended up doing 6 or so coats. I stopped at 4 and it had a sort of dark but speckled look that I liked, but I noticed a spot that didn't get covered well so I went ahead and put on 2 more coats to get it covered and it got a lot darker. I still like how it turned out though

I am going to have to steal your idea of to tinting the pony once I get my Mach grill delete. For the side markers did you take them out or just tape everything?

I just taped them. I seriously recommend taking them out. I did a shitty job taping and didn't seal all the individual pieces of paper together so I ended up with a bunch of overspray all over the paint (thank god for rubbing compound) and the area immediately around the side markers got sprayed since I couldn't get the tap all the way back in there. Gotta walk right up next to the car, kneel down, and take a good look to see it but I know it's there.

And I just got done tinting my tail lights. I was bored so I said fuck you to the weather and threw a tarp over the car since I couldn't take it out of the garage while I painted. Editing pics into the first post

I think i will just take them out then, pulling off the rear bumper cover is surprisingly easy. Its mostly held on with those ford plastic pins and like 10 bolts.

I think Monday I'm going to take the tail lights out and give them a few more coats. They looked pretty dark to me until I put them on the car. They're dark enough for me to be happy for a few days though I've got all of Monday to waste, I need to find some other small things to do to the car

Wow man looks nice, especially the mustang in the front. I may have to do that but I am not sure yet. I have tried to take off my grille before and there is 1 screw that wont come out for some reason it just keeps turning and turning and I cant pull the grille out :-/ I need to find a way to take it off because I have been repainting my black pieces (hood scoop piece and side scoop pieces) and the last remaining part is the grille. Also how do you take the side markers off? Do they just pop off like the scoop pieces?

I had 3 of the push pins that wouldn't come out. I ordered some new ones that weren't the same but they worked (RockAuto.com go to Extras > Body-Exterior > Hardware > Specialty Clip/Retainer. Find part number K TOOL # 04363. Says it's for GM bumpers but it worked for the grill) and they I used a screw driver to pry the old ones out. Don't hover your face over the push pins while you pry them out, I learned my lesson. And I think the side markers are bolted on so you have to get behind them to get them off.

So when you forced the push pins out they broke I take it? I just have 1 that wont come out so breaking it wont kill me because its one of the inside ones, the outside ones will still hold the grille on lol. And I will check about the side markers tomorrow if its just a couple bolts holding them on I will take them off and paint them. What did you use for sandpaper 500 grit? And you just sanded them, painted, then clear coat? Did you do any wetsanding with like 2000 grit and add more clear or color?

just use some red scotchbrite to scuff it. you can wetsand, but you dont need to add clear and especially not color. just wetsand, then buff

Well by color I meant the nightshade stuff. And wouldn't I need to add a clear coat on the Mustang on the grille to make it nice and shiny?

Depends on if you use a gloss paint or not. I used a gloss white on the pony corral then gave it 2 light coats of clear to make it shine a little more, but the VHT Nite Shades made the pony shine nicely without any clear coat. If you paint the honeycomb part then it's up to you if you go flat or gloss black on it. Flat will look factory (and match the rest of the honeycomb) and gloss would be interesting.

For my hood scoop and side scoop inserts I did 2 coats of flat black and 2 coats of clear and it came out nice. They do have a shine to them but they don't like glare in sunlight and thats what I planned on doing to the honeycomb I will get pics of the scoop inserts to show you when its not all rainy outside. I have also thought about just putting those same 2 coats of flat black on the outside chrome rim of the pony and add clear to it too to keep the shine and leave the actual pony how it is because my car is silver with chrome rims and I feel like a black pony would just be odd on my car. It works nice on yours though because of the white car with black rims and other blackened out stuff.
