Dang chamois!

okay....so uhh...I'm probably a complete idiot for doing this, and I hate myself for it...but I'm young and know nothing about cars...

Last summer I got a fresh paint job on my 94 mustang, nothing fancy, same color and everything, just to freshen it up, and also cus it had minuscule little scratches pretty much over the whole body, not sure from what, but they were there and looked bad in the reflection of the sun.

So I got a new paint job, looked all nice and shiny....for a few days...until I washed it and decided to try drying it with a chamois. I guess I used it wrong somehow....and I just inflicted a bunch of those little scratches on my car all over again, so I feel like I spent $1500 for nothing.

Would such scratches only be on the lacquer or do you think they would actually be on the paint itself...? Can buffing the paint get rid of that? or is there anything I can do other than repainting it again?

it is just normal wear on the paint mine is the same way a year after painting. Just get a good compound (I reccomned turtle wax compound) and a good wax (I reccomend turtle wax ice) give your self all day wash the car very well, compund the whole car (hand buff it IMO takes longer but less risk,) then wax the whole thing.

Make sure you don't have any dirt or debris on your cham the next time you use it. Did you by chance drop the cham on the ground? I have a buffing cloth that I dropped on the ground and it had debris in it....it left some tiny scatches. Needless to say it got pitched.

+1 on everything except the hand buffing. If you want the car to get a really good shine back use a low speed buffer. Don't try to use a high speed buffer or you will eat up your paint job. Get a low speed buffer and keep it constantly moving. To be honest you probably didn't need the paint job, all you needed was a good detailing. They can blend out small scratches as long as they don't go through the paint. I bought my car a little over a year a ago and it's black, so everything shows up on it. It had small scratches and swirl marks all over it. A good buffing with a good Carnauba wax and it will all blend over time. I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about this stuff. i plan to try it in spring.

No matter where you go i believe there is a certain amount of time you are advised to wait before washing and waxing your car. I know that you are supposed to wait a month before you wax. I'm not sure how long before you wash.

The chamois should absolutely be wet first. However. After time a chamois will wear on your paint, and I hate the possibility of your chamois picking up something and accidentally in turn scratching your paint.

A friend of mine who shows cars & bikes recommended this product to me.

Mr. Clean AutoDry Car Wash Kit.
It uses a replaceable filter to deionize the water & special soap for the wash gun. It also comes with a super-soft wash mit. It is so easy to use, it's ridiculous. You fill the gun with soap, hook it up with the quick connect that is supplied in the kit, set the gun to rinse, and wet the car. Turn the dial to soap, and soap the car down. Soap your mit up a bit, and wash. Turn the dial to rinse, and rinse it off. Turn the dial to spot free rinse, and it rinses the car with deionized water. Even a black car, which I own, will dry spot free. NO chamoising the car every friggin' time you wash. No spots. You can wash your car in 15 minutes and walk away. The kit even comes in a portable case so you can take it anywhere. All you need is a garden hose. The replacement soap & filters are only a few bucks each, and last about a dozen washes, so the cost is equivalent or less, to taking your ride to a car wash or spray wash every couple of days or however often you wash your car.
I know guys rant about this product or that product, but I'm telling you, this one works amazing, every time.

There is only one thing you left out. The damn gun is made of cheap plastic that can crack if you accidentally drop it or in this weather, if it freezes and thaws too quick. I wash my car at minimum every other day in the summer and that seems like it would get expensive for something that barely cost me anything now.

Mr. clean auto dry does not work. In order to truly purify the water of debris you would need a professional setup costing several hundred dollars.

The sprayer with filter is nice to have for amateur detailers though.

Autopia is a great place to read up on detailing your car.

Not true. It works for me every single time. Every time. Maybe you had seriously hard water or something. And I never said it purified water, I said it deionizes water. And neckbone, I guess you shouldn't drop it or let it freeze brother. lol

My father had an attachment like that, but without the filter system. It broke in less than two weeks. We both looked at the one you are talking about, but were doubtful if it would be worth the money. We all wash our cars at my parent's because he has the big ass driveway. My father washes two cars, my sister washes her Camaro, my wife has her Hyundai and I have my Mustang and my Expedition. We'd be buying a filter every four or five days. LOL
