Make your Electronics Independant Not IGN'D
Im sorry ya'll this is my favorite subject when it comes to stuff like this. So starting with radi of course. Do you go out with your teams for group drives and meets and like to jam? At the same time to you hateleaving the key in wondering if some slick F&*^@#R will get in and go or a buddy plays around and jacks your keys? Check it out I am going to show you how to run a 3 switched "PowerLine"(I called it that).
84 - 88 Mustang 5.0 What To Purchase: 1. Go out and pick out up to 3 of your favorite or most perffered switches (I like the one's that light up when you turn them on) 2. Buy at least 4 packs of wire (2 Black/2Red), and one clear wire. 3. Buy 4 packs of those female plugs (So you can plug it to your switch) 4. Buy GOOD wire cutters or if you want to add an additional 10-15 minutes use your scissors LOL 5. Get up on a day off early one pretty morning 6. Get a bunch of ties (perfferablly the ones that you poke in the hole and pull. Ok, you gotten everything you need so let's start this modding process. ASSUMING YOU HAVE ALREADY ADDED A PLACE FOR YOUR SWITCHES Setting Up: Inspect your vehicle where you want to run these wires and switches and be sure your wires stay clear of the motor. Don't get scared that you will shock the crap out of yourself, just keep the black and red wires AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. The length of wiring is totally up to you, Let's get started and im going to assume you will run these wires through the pedal clutch or from under the steering column to your dash wall. Running the Wires: 1. Take your red wire and cut off a nice long piece enough to run from the dash wall to your battery and splice and connect.(Don'T SPLICE OTHER END YET!) 2. Take your black wire and ground it to a very clean area on the firewall or the battery. 3. The ground wire and power wire will be your base for power so on the other ends of the wires splice em. 4. Take more of the packaged red wire and cut 10 more about 2-4 inchs each and splice em on both ends, same for the packaged black wire (YA'LL, GO GET A BEER AND A SMOKE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE SITTING BACK DOING THIS A WHILE COMING UP...) PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS PART!!!!(SAFETEY IS MORE KEY HERE) 5. Of those ten red wires you had cut, take one and splice both ends out. 6. Take one and twist it to the main battery wire then add a female plug to it. Do the same for the ground wire as it will run the same. 7. Connect the red plug to one switch on the male power plug. 8. Connect the black plug to the male ground side. AT THIS POINT, YOU SHOULD HAVE THE MAIN POWER WIRE RAN AND A LITTLE PIECE OF ANOTHER RED WIRE HANGING, SAME FOR THE GROUND WIRES. (You're doing it right if so). Flip the switch to see if the light comes on. If not check your wiring. You shouldn't have mistakes at this point. NOW, disconnect ground wire for the time being 9. With the "little" red wire already hanging freely from the first switch, take another little red one and twist it to the other side of that red one and add another female plug. 10. Plug it into the second switch (Take your ground wire and test that switch) REPEAT 6 DOWN TO DO THE SAME FOR YOUR GROUND WIRES FOR THE SWITCH. REPEAT 6 DOWN TO RUN YOUR LAST WIRE TO YOUR THIRD SWITCH. You should have a spiderleg of wires running off of each other. here's a quick break down to make sure you got it right RED WIRE Main wire ran from battery to the inside of the car Little red wire connected to main battery wire Little red wires running off of each other all plugging into the "Power/PWR" male plug on the switch. BLACK WIRE Main wire ran from a ground to the inside of the car Little black wire connected to main grounding wire Little black wires running off of each other all plugging into the "Ground/GRND" male plug on the switch. At this point, test your switches to make sure the light switches light up of course. Don't worry, if they are all working then you know for sure it's time to have fun and this part is the easiest of all. Running The Accessories RADIO - take the "IGN" switched wire off and connect a female plug on it then plug it into the "ACC"/Accessory male plug on the switch. Turn the switch on and your radio now works without the key. (FAMILY REUNIONS WILL NOT BE THE SAME!!!!!!! EXTERNAL TACH - Same thing, take it off of that ign wire and do like the radio(Don't ask why but when I go to the track or take a early tip to win some street cash, I turn it on/off. IGNITION SWITCH - Snap the power wire LEAVING PLENTY OF SPACE TO SPLICE. From the Ignition side, do the same. That's about it, trust me you can add as many as you need by running the wires like you read above and add whatever you need. Im going to say this before I tell you what I had going on my old car... RUNNING A MILLION THINGS IN YOUR CAR PUTS A HEAVY LOAD ON THE BATTERY/ALTERNATOR. RUN WHAT YOU NEED AND THAT'S IT. GET AN OPTIMA BATTERY TO EXTEND THE LIFE. that's all Now in my old ford focus before I traded for my first muscle car I had switches for my accessories too like... 1. IGN 2. FUEL CUTOFF 3. RADIO 4. TACH POWER 5. TACH LIGHT (I liked the blue so I said screw the $50.00 color changer) 6. BOOST GAUGE LIGHT Now if you are needing something like this I usually charge a measly $12.00 because some people don't want to do wires and stuff and people really enjoy that I do that. Includes me creating the wiring, way better instructions with pictures on a piece of paper, and the female plugs already on them. Don't worry ya'll ya'll should already know how to do this but some don't so please don't make fun of me. I just enjoy doing what I do and wanted to share. Hey, car toys would have charged a great whopping $75 - $110 including labor. But here you go for free. More tips too THANKS YOU GUYS!!!!!!! TIPS 1. Be sure you run wires away from the motor 2. To be extra sure, find some raised plastic that you could use as a plate to cover the back of the plugs up so wires are just in there own little "House" and screw into the plate. Ok ya'll that's it for now this is waaaaaaaay long. Got Questions email me or respond. GTX Racing Club McKinney, Texas Tony P.
