help with painting

Okay I painted my jlt intake and it was complete fail i have attempted to paint it 3 times and the paint will not stick and if it does it bubbles up. So what should I be doing to get this right? I sanded cleaned and painted with krylon fusion. But I think I need a paint made for high heat. anyways anyone have any tips for when I decide to sand it down again and repaint.

What material are you trying to paint? JLT makes intakes cold air intakes out of either Carbon fiber or plastic and aluminum? Preparation on carbon fiber is different than on plastic. Pics of the paint would be helpful. I'm a materials engineer and diagnose coating, materials problems for a living.

It's the plastic one. and pics lolol lets just say it looks horrible. The paint almost wants to bead off of the plastic like it has rainex on it. I sanded cleaned and painted. I didnt use a primer maybe thats why?

Definitely use a primer (or at least adhesion promoter since it's plastic, adhesion promoter is great on plastic). I don't believe the intake tube should get too hot so you don't need a high temp paint and Krylon Fusion is not a high temp paint (it's made for use on plastic). Also, are you cleaning with a soap and water mix or just water? I highly recommend using just water. I've had trouble with soap leaving a residue in the past and it would result in the paint drying very very slowly and areas would bubble up.

I agree with Mcqueen. Make sure you remove all traces of paint first. Then slightly rough up the surface to promote adhesion. Use isopropyl alcohol to on a lintless cloth remove any debris. Then apply either plastic primer or adhesion promoter. Sometimes we want to get our painting done asap. Better to place a light coating, let it dry, then apply your next coat, finally building up the total coating thickness after about three to five coats. Use one of those spray triggers on spray bombs to get even pressure and avoid colored fingers. I also do not think high temp spray is necessary. Go slow and you will avoid drips and runs.
