Fixed my tinted tails!
I tinted my tails with VHT today, some parts of it look good, and others are dull and blotchy. Here's how I did them:
Clean with soap/water Wet sand with 400 grit 3 light coats of adhesion promoter 3 light coats of VHT 4 coats clear Wet sand with 2000 Buff( by hand) with Meguiers Ultimate Compound I can post up a pic if needed but what did I do wrong to get the blotchy spots?

Did you do any sanding in between coats?

I already did. This time I started with 800, then skipped the adhesion promoter and it looks waay better. I'm waiting for the clear to dry now, Im not sure how its going to turn out, I think the clear is screwing it up too. Should I spray the clear while the VHT is still wet?

Sanding.
I initially sanded mine with 1000. I would say the initial 400 grit might be a little rough. You should be good with 800. I also let the VHT dry for about 3 hours and did a light wetsanding w/ 1500 grit (then wash) before clear.

i never use adhesion promoter when i tint heads or tails...could be a factor along with a heavy finger on the nozzle...do you press the spray nozzle before even over the tails or when you're aiming at them?

So Round 2 went very well. I skipped the adhesion promoter, sanded from 400,600,800,2000, the sprayed wet coats this time, then cleared and buffed. Turned out pretty good I think.
Heres the end result that I got the first time. The opicture doesnt do it justice, it looked horrible. ![]() Heres the second try, before sanding and buffing. ![]() And end result. ![]() Im still going to polish and wax later, so it should get a little glossier I think. I think Im going to remove the spoiler tomorrow and see how that looks.

Your second attempt looks pretty good. Polish them up really well, let them sit for a few days, then give them a few coats of wax.

What grit are you sanding with and are you wet sanding? Dry sanding will leave scuffs. Get enough scuffs and things tend to look white. You need to wet sand with a very high grit sandpaper (I like 2000grit+ for final wet sanding), keeping the sandpaper and object well lubricated.

Even wet snading with 2000 grit, mine were still a tad hazy and scratched. I just sprayed the clear and buffed with the compound after it dryed and it looks good. (I sanded with 2000 before spraying vht so it already had a smooth surface)

When you wet sand with a high grit sandpaper, sand lightly. You're trying to smooth the surface, not scuff it.

It was 1500, but it wasn't wet sanding so thats probably the problem. What do you use for the clear coat your talking about? And after the clear is on what is the best thing to use for buffing, would something like a microfiber towel work?

They look good the second time! I wish mine were that light now. I'm gonna re-do them Wednesday. Hope they turn out as good as yours.
