DIY black headlight housings

Been sitting on this for a few months, but figured i'd spread the wealth. When I bought my 99 GT it had brand new OEM replacement headlights. Unfortunately they were the chrome housings. So rather than buying a whole new set, I decided to make a little project of it. Now this is all going from memory so I may forget a couple small things

What I started with

First things first, remove the headlight along with the bulbs. Next you'll want to remove the metal clips on the headlight holding the lense to the housing. There's also a small phillips screw at the end of the headlight housing (by the reflector) that needs to be removed as well

I went ahead and popped them in the oven for about for about 5 minutes (give or take) at 300*. then slowly but surely peeled the lense away from the housing.

Then you'll want to pull the chrome portion away from the housing. I can't remember if there's a screw holding it in place or not, so you may want to check around for one. once it's out of the housing, go ahead and remove the reflector as well. It's held in by a small bit glue so be careful pulling it off.

After which, it should look something like this

Next I sanded the plastic using 600, then 800, then 1000. Then comes the paint, what I used was Rustoleum semigloss paint that I picked up from Autozone. But any black should work.

Let it dry overnight then repeated steps in reverse to put the housing back together. I skipped this step, but you may want to pick up some sealant to reseal the headlight.

I did mine one at a time to show a before and after, but here's the final product

It's really one of those things where you do it at your own risk. As long as you're not foolish and keep an eye on them than you'll be fine.

That's my next thing. Been wanting to retrofit projectors for years and figure I should really get on it. Fairly simple process given the right tools and a little patience
