painting rims

I've done alot of research and I'm pretty set on painting my stock rims sometime in the near future. I googled and found some good tutorials of how to do it and most people say it seems to hold up well. The trend in most of them i noticed was:

1. Sand down the polish to allow a rougher surface

2. Apply several coats of clear coat

3. Apply paint (I think Duplicolor is the best choice I've seen. I've also seen others use black engine spray paint and it comes out just as good)

4. Apply another clear coat if desired.

I'm concerned about chipping and how long it'll actually last but the trade off for black rims i think will be worth it. Any body been successful/unsuccessful with this? Or critisize my idea if you want as well

Powder coating if you can find a place for a reasonable price would be the est option and will last linger. spay bombing it there is bound to be an impurity that will cause it to flake and peel.

i just finished them this weekend. everytime i look at them i have to yell "ballin!!!" It was alot more work than i thought it would be. I'll post pics tomm. Some of the lessons i learned in case you ever paint your rims:

Cake on the clearcoat- i tryed doing really thin layers of clearcoat and it started to look really foggy. Everytime i touch the paint i would get black dust on me. I finally realized if i put the clearcoat on thick, it would make it glossy and ultimately protect the paint. And when i say clearcoat i mean 2 full cans. If you dont use clear coat it's ridicuously rough and impossble to wipe or wash. I only used 1.5 cans of paint. The rest I'm saving for touch up paint in case if ever chips

Take your time on the taping. Don't rush through the taping part. It's pretty darn important. I left mine with a silver lip so that took a good 3 hours just to make sure it was even. Also dont be like me and forget to make sure the tape behind the wheel is flsuh and even. I had to go back and tocuhup i few spots where i taped crooked not realizing it would affect it.

Set aside a full weekend- this stuff takes a long time to do. I started Friday afternoon and ended Sunday afternoon.

I'm so excited to finally post pics. they'll be here soon
