Red or Blue Cluster/HVAC/Radio Conversion..CCD

Howdy,
I've been keeping an eye on Caribbean Custom Designs, and they've released a new conversion from the stock green lighting in the Mustang to pretty much any color you would like. I am curious if anyone has done the red or blue conversion yet & if you have pictures to share!

I have been really interested in changing everything to BLUE led's, but my buddy has a G6 with the red interior lighting and it just looks so sick. Plus red is cheaper ;-)

OR, has anyone done the LED swap themselves? How-to: Turn stock gauges to blue or red - Dakota USA Forums
It seems awfully easy, but the price for the CCD kit is just about the same...

Actually I just did this conversion the other day...If you want I'll put some pictures up and maybe a walk through or something. Really the hardest part would be to get the gauges to glow red or something. They come with a blue tint over them alreadyand whenthe yellow bulbs shine throughit's green. So by switching to super white leds, it comes through as blue. Your odometer is still going to be green though.

that would be awesome if you could post some pictures. yeah, the odometer is stuck green, and the info panel on the radio is stuck green as well if i do the led conversion. Someday I'll figure that one out...oh and I have to figure out the shifter!

If you can wait till monday night, I'll snap some pictures then. As for the radio, I can't help you there, you'd have to replace it with an aftermarket head unit for different colors. You can replace the HVAC controls though.

I haven't taken apart the hvac, but couldn't you use the white bulb's similar to the cluster setup? ...how would we also change the mach radio color, as well as the shifter? Thats the problem I always come across when I think about starting this project

That's exactly what I did. Now bear in mind that the red on your HVAC is going to be slightly washed out. As for the radio, I wouldn't know, I replaced mine with an aftermarket unit but if you were willing to tear into it you could probably find the sizes. As for the shifter, I'm assuming it's an automatic then? I have a stick so I wouldn't know about tearing into that. I'd assume it's something you probably don't want to mess with. If I were you, I'd consider prying up the trim ring around the shifter base and putting a leather boot on there (much like a manual) and that could cover it up, you'd just then need to remember what gear is what. Aside from that, you'd have to get the advice from one of the guys who is a little more familiar with the automatic if you would be able to get access to the lights in there. If you could, then it'd probably just be more of the same.

Now, you're saying the knobs are have a blue light in them and the light bulbs are turning it green like the factory hvac correct?

If that's the case then it'll be resolved when you perform the switch. Later tonight I'm going to upload the pictures I took, and I'll provide a walk through as well as show you my invoice for the LEDs and all that, but right now the pictures are on my camera phone, so later on tonight/this week I'll be doing the pictures with a real camera...hopefully.

So here's my invoice from superbrightleds.com
QTY Description Price Amount
2 WLED-x5 LED Wide Angle LED Bulb - Cool White WLED CW5 3.94 7.88
6 74-xHP Wedge Base LED Bulb - White 74-WHP 2.49 14.94

Subtotal 22.82
Freight 10.00
Total 32.82

You actually only need 5 of the 74 LEDs, I ordered an extra by accident.

You need..I believe they're allen keys or hex wrenches or whatever they're called, and a set of sockets. You pull out on your headlight knob till it pops off, don't worry goes right back on. Then at the upper part of your cover around the gauges you'll feel the first set of screws to remove with the hex wrenches or whatever. Undo that. Then pull it off and set it aside.

Inside of there, there will be 4 more of those screws holding the gauges in place, one at each of the bottom corners and one like a quarter of the way up. May be more, don't remember exactly how many. Undo those and pull the gauge cluster out as best you can to get access to the wiring in back. Undo the 2 plugs and pull it all the way out, you may need to tilt down your steering wheel.

Once out flip the gauges cluster over and you'll see the white backing with some golden bolts/screws holding it on. Use your socket to remove them, then gently pull it off. You should see several small plastic things that contain one end of the bulbs. Can't describe what they look like off the top of my head though. Anyway, use a small screw driver or something like that and while turning the plastic end cap just pry up each side of it to remove it. Then pull the old bulbs out of these plastic bases and put the new LEDs in. The LEDs are polarized so put them all back in and plug the harnesses back into the back to make sure they light up. If not then reverse the position of the bulbs that aren't lighting up. Then reinstall.

For the HVAC, you need to pull out your radio and such so that it's just the plastic trimming and the HVAC controls in there. Underneath the part where the radio sat on the small seperating plastic piece there will be 2 more of those screws, remove them. There will be one inside of the radio slot straight back from those first 2 screws. Undo that one as well. Pop the vents out up top and gently pull out the trim. Once you get it off there are 4 more of those screws holding the HVAC panel in place. Undo those and pull the hvac out as best you can. There are only 2 bulbs here and there are I believe 4 harnesses plugged in so I just Undid the bulbs from the panel and replaced the factory incandescents with the LEDs. Put them back in and check to make sure they lightup. If theydo then reinstall the screws, put the trim back on, pop the vents back in and rescrew everything back in.

If this all sounds like too much work, don't worry it's not that bad. If it sounds confusing, I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow to show you what I'm talking about. I'm going to be looking to see if you can also change the turn signal color so I can probably provide pictures for the gauge removal at least.

Thanks for the info woody, sounds like a good project for a rainy day. I would love to start this, but I still need to figure out how to change the lights in the shifter...or else it would really be pointless. Then I might have to break down & try CCD for the radio conversion

I'm willing to bet that you'd have to take out the shifter to do that, you should ask someone in the 99-04 forum, I'm sure someone there would be able to answer.
