rear quarter panel??

First off, I'm new to MM and I'm already impressed how fast everyone was to help and give suggestions. On to the next topic....

Basketball hoop fell on my car in a storm and Im wondering how hard it would be to tackle replacing myself since I found one pretty cheap in the same color.

Couldn't be that hard right?

Welcome the site. I personally don't know what this would take. But I need to replace a quarter panel too so I'd like to know also lol

im on my phone right now guys so I will go into detail late but replacing a quarter panel is pretty involved. I would sugest if it is b ad enough to warrant the replacement of the quarter panel have a body shop do it. unless you have the experience to tackle it.

can you guys post pics of the damage?

The rear quarter panel is supposed to be a real bitch on any car from what i've heard. When I had my entire passenger rear end re-done the shop said that was what took the longest with all the welding and such involved.

To replace the quarter panel you will have to remove the bumper, some interior, drill all the spotwelds out, make a splice in the sail panel, weld the new one on, do the body work, prime and block it, and paint it.

It might not need a new quarter panel, because quarter panel dents are pretty easy to take out with hammers and dolies because you can get to the back of it from the trunk.

I suggest going to a local body shop and seeing what they say.

Sorry its kind of a shitty picture but here.

Pretty sure pounding from the trunk is out of the question. I think it needs to be taken off whether its replaced or not.

Your right it is to far forward to knock it out from the inside, but i would still repair the dent instead of replacing the quarter panel. I have repaired way worse dents than that on quarter panels before. Honestly it really wouldnt be that hard of a dent to to repair for someone that knows how to do bodywork.I would just use a stud puller. Here is a site talking about how one works.

Fixing An Auto Body Dent With A Stud Welder and Slide Hammer

If you can take a picture from about 1 - 1 1/2 FT back with your fist laying on top of the dent so i can get a better idea of how big it is I can give you an idea how many hours a bodyshop would charge you to repair it.

As I was uploading the picture I realized you said fist... hopefully this works just as well.

That process seems pretty straight forward. Only thing making me not want to try myself is that the dent goes over top of the angle at the top of the quarter panel. Not sure if that would actually make it harder but it seems that it would heh.

Thanks for all the help so far btw

I can tell from that picture, no need to take another one.

That dent really isnt that bad, but your rignt the dent going over the bodyline will make it hareder to fix because you will have to "re-make" the body line right there.

So depending on the shop it is a 3-4 hour dent, plus about 2 hours for taking parts on and off, another 4-4.5 hours of paint time.

So take those multiplied by the shop rate in your area and add the materials and you have your price.

In my town it at a bodyshop it would cost you around 600 dollars to get it fixed.

So you think it would be cheaper to have a new one put on if i could supply the panel for $150-200? Same color

To get a new one put on your looking at 2-3 times that, and actually i would charge more to use a used quarter panel because i would have more clean up time on the used new panel getting it ready to weld on. There is a lot involved with replacing a quarter panel. The only time it is done is because of rust or if the bodywork needed is an enormuos amoount.
