October’s ROTM brought us a car that has been built for bracket racing. Casper GT’s 2000 Mustang GT has been meticulously modified for drag strip reliability. Now before you start thinking of a big loping cam or the sound of a spooling turbo let me point out that the cam covers on this GT have never even been off.

Casper has built this car from the ground up, focusing more on getting the power he already has to ground instead of wasting rubber with useless hp. For the steady racer an automatic transmission is a must. Casper’s 4r70w transmission has been modified to give him that hard, neck snapping launch on every pass. With a valve body from an 02 GT, Trans-Go HD2 shift kit (with extensive upgrades), 10″ 3800 stall Dirty Dog converter, FRPP cooler and finally a FRPP aluminum driveshaft tie’s into his stock rear end with FRPP 4.10’s.

To handle the abuse of the strip Casper put in a CHE axle brace with custom relocated lowers and CHE spherical adjustable uppers. He also added a set of Strange 10 way shocks and deleted both the front and rear sway bar while retaining the stock springs. A difference between his and most other drag cars would probably the one airbag on the right side.

Now obviously you can’t have a race car without at least a few go fast parts. Casper’s bolt on mod’s include: Trickflow plenum, 70mm FRPP throttle body, Accel coils, 19lb EV-6 injectors, Autolite 103 plugs, Reishe performance 170* thermostat, March underdrive pulleys with SFI balancer, Stewart water pump, Airaid cold air kit, FRPP shorty headers, BBK o/r/h and a Flowmaster 2 chamber cat back. He also deleted the EGR, The A/C and the cruise control. This, with the MSD 2 step, SLP line lock and the high speed cooling fan mod sums up the performance mods.

Finally He had to make it look good. He accomplished this using the HO Fibertrends 2.5 cowl hood, Mach grill delete and chin spoiler, 01 headlights, 03-04 Cobra sideskirts and he finished it off by deleting the fog lights and rear spoiler. Like any serious drag racer Casper has two sets of rims, his bullets for street use and then his drag rims which are Centerline Telstars with a 15×4’s up front wrapped in 165/80r’s and 15×8’s in the rear wrapped in 275/50r Mickey Thompson ET Street radials.

Congratulations from Modded Mustangs to Casper GT for this ROTM.

Following up from their announcement at last year’s SEMA Show, Cooper Tire recently invited us to their test facility near San Antonio, TX, to experience some new products for performance cars. The ZEON RS3-A and RS3-S will be available through Cooper Tire dealers in April, just in time for Spring’s road challenges.

The original ZEON RS3 tire was developed in conjunction with ROUSH Performance for their ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang. Limited sizes were available for other cars, but that issue is being addressed with the new models. The RS3-A high performance, all season tire will be released in 31 sizes, with more to follow. The RS3-S high performance, summer tire will be available in 21 sizes.

The high performance, all season category of tires has emerged over the past three years and has presented a conundrum for many who beileve that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Such tires are typically constructed with “zones,” apparently dedicated to a particular apsect of performance, and the Cooper product is no different. The use of an assymetric (non-symmetrical) tread design breaks the tread into segments having properties to enhance handling and control, cornering stability, winter traction and wet/light snow performance.

Yet, an explanation like this oversimplifies the “mystery” of such tires. For example, the RS3-A tire has a UTQG tread wear rating of 500, which should make it wear like rock and, in relative terms, ride like that as well. This is not the case. While incorporating silica rubber compounds to increase wear resistance and improve wet handling, the tire exhibits a comfortable ride with minimal noise.

We had the opportunity to make back-to-back comparisons on both dry and wet autocross-type courses between the RS3-A and a Korean-sourced UHP all-season tire having a 420 tread wear rating. The choice was a reasonable one and one that you might face the next time you’re looking to replace a set of hi-po tires on your sedan.

Cooper’s test facility has a 14-acre ‘wetpad,’ engineered to provide a constant water depth for testing. A course was marked out with cones that took on the order of 50+ seconds to complete a lap, as measured by timing equipment. While a few cones took more than their fair share of abuse (…by others, of course), it took little effort to shave three seconds off my lap time when on the RS3-A tires. Course learning was not an issue by this portion of the day, as I had already logged at least a dozen laps in the wet.

The difference was impressive and immediately evident. On the issue of tread wear, longer lasting does not necessarily mean a harder compound. Advances in the ability to disperse silica additives (a.k.a. sand, or rock) through the rubber contribute significantly to this lack of trade-off. The increase in abrasion resistance, and therefore tread life, does not come at the cost of ride quality.

Cooper’s RS3-S high performance summer tire displayed similar lap time improvements when compared to a French-made ‘Sport’ tire. Absolute dry grip was clearly superior and, in the wet, the RS3-S showed better results as well – though not to the astonishing levels of the RS3-A. The summer tire uses a combination of wide, blocky tread elements and grooves to deliver a satisfying combination of both wet and dry performance.

If you’ve not heard of Cooper Tire before, now is the time to pay attention. The company has significant R&D investment in these tires and it shows. Unless you live in Arizona and don’t take your car out in the wet, the performance of these new tires is something that you’re going to need… sooner or later.

With headquarters in Findlay, OH, Cooper Tire has manufacturing, sales, distribution, technical and design facilities within its family of companies located in 10 countries around the world.

Some of us like to keep cars for years. Keep them in the garage, bring them out to wash them, and then put them right back in. Not February Ride of the Month Winner, Ryan Weems. Not only does he daily drive his vehicles, he seems to change them out on a monthly basis.

Case in point is his ROTM winning Bullitt. After selling his white Mach 1, Ryan decided he could not live without another Mustang in his stable. So he went searching and found what he thought was going to be a perfect fit. It came in the form of a black supercharged Bullitt.

Ryan spent countless hours massaging the paint trying to get rid off all the imperfections to make the car shine. All of the work he put in to paint correction was complemented by the 4″ VIS carbon fiber cowl hood, Mach 1 chin spoiler, and grill delete.

Sucking in air under the hood is a Novi 1000 running 8 pounds of boost. Keeping that compressed air cooled was the job of a CX Racing intercooler. The much needed fuel was supplied by a set of FRPP 39 lb injectors. All that forced air had to go somewhere. Helping in those breathing chores were Heddman longtube headers mated to a Heddman x pipe. Finally all of the spent fuel and air exited a Flowmaster catback.

Helping get that power to the ground was a set of 305/35/18 Nitto drag radials mounted to 18×10 Anthracite Fr500s. Up front a set of 18x9s were treated to a set of BFG G Force tires. Keeping those tires firmly planted during hard launches required something other then the stock suspension. Tokico D spec shocks and struts with Eibach Sportline springs proved up to the task. Stiffening up the suspension is a full set of Energy Suspension poly bushings. Aligning all of this is a set of UPR camber caster plates.

These mods, and apparently some form of driver mod, allowed Ryan to rocket this Bullitt down the quarter mile in 12.7 seconds with a trap speed of 110mph.

Never being happy, and always wanting a new flavor, Ryan sold the car to work on something better. How do you improve on that you ask? It’s simple. Keep tuning in to the ROTM and I am sure you will see Ryans next project that I lovingly call the Big Banana.

With some car enthusiasts, exhaust systems seem like an easy to select product – no big deal. Just find some adequate tubing, some mufflers and go. What could go wrong, right? … Wrong!

We recently received this story about an exhaust system gone wrong. While significant money was spent creating the magnificent drive train, the exhaust was so badly designed as to cause Kevin Crocie of Colvin Automotive to wonder if the engine was damaged. After all, to have the World Products 427cid, 495hp engine only generate 258 horsepower at the rear tires, something had to be really wrong.

As Crocie ultimately determined, the exhaust system was the culprit – and was easily corrected through proper fitment. Documented here by one of Flowmaster’s technical experts, Jeff Thomas, who recently discussed the scenario with Crocie, the correction was miraculous – and cemented the fact that you can select the wrong exhaust products for your vehicle with disastrous results. This worst case scenario is a perfect example of – exhaust design gone wrong!

Colvin Automotive, an advanced auto repair and restoration facility in Austin, Texas, was chosen by the owner of this beautiful 1968 Mustang to diagnose some serious performance and drivability issues. The highly modified Mustang was equipped with a World Products 427 Windsor engine rated at 495 flywheel horsepower. After running the car on Colvin’s in-house Dyno Jet chassis dynamometer, power peaked at 258.1 RWHP (at only 3700 RPM) and 331.7 ft-lbs of torque, Worst of all, the engine exhibited what appeared to be some serious internal problems.

Kevin Crocie, Colvin’s expert engine man, said after the first dyno pull, “From the lack of power and mechanical noises coming from it, I thought the engine had been severely damaged”. Fearing the worst, preparations were made to remove the engine and tear it down for inspection. As the exhaust system was removed from the car, Crocie noted the small diameter (2.5-inch) tubing and the small round, glasspack style mufflers that were used. On a hunch, he returned the Mustang to the dyno and ran the car with open headers. This resulted in a much smoother sounding engine and a peak of 398.5 RWHP at 5700 RPM – 140 more HP – Torque increased to 385.9 ft-lbs at 4900 RPM.

At this point, Crocie contacted us at Flowmaster, having had previous successful experiences with our products. We delivered two polished 70 Series Big Block II stainless steel mufflers – PN# 53074 (as requested to match the upcoming show-quality exhaust – no internal design differences from standard products), leaving the Colvin Automotive folks to fabricate the rest of the full 3.00-inch diameter mandrel-bent dual exhaust system for the car. The headers already in place, as well as the engine, remained untouched, except for tuning once the exhaust was installed.

Upon strapping the Mustang back onto the Dyno Jet, power was found to peak at 399.0 RWHP, again at 5700 RPM (more horsepower than open exhaust), while peak torque was raised by 33.4 ft-lbs- to 419.3 ft-lbs- over the open-header run. From the initial dyno run, torque was increased by 87.6 ft-lbs!

With the Mustang now running at its full potential, Colvin Automotive has reaffirmed their belief in the performance gain achieved with Flowmaster products. You can understand the car owner’s appreciation for the major performance gains noted and he loves the famous Flowmaster sound. His fears of the car becoming ‘too loud’ were put to rest by using the Flowmaster 70 Series Big Block II mufflers, which keep the overall sound level very well controlled for enjoyable top-down driving in this one-of-a-kind Mustang.

Painted trim parts are one of the best ways to make your Mustang stand out in a crowd. Buying the parts and taking them down to the local body shop on the other hand, can be a major drain on your time and your wallet. Now AmericanMuscle.com is making these upgrades easier and more affordable than ever, thanks to its new state-of-the-art paint facility.

Using exclusively Ford OEM colors, AmericanMuscle’s master painting technicians have developed a 14-step process that delivers superior shine and durability in every painted part. Best of all, because AmericanMuscle is painting your part ahead of time, ALL PARTS SHIP THE SAME DAY at a price far less than having it done at your local body shop.

Better: And OEM-spec facility and 14-point painting system ensure only the highest quality.

Faster: Pre-painted parts are always in stock and ship the same day you order.

More Affordable: AmericanMuscle buys in bulk and paints in bulk, producing better parts for less $$$.

The Booth

The AmericanMuscle paint booth is nothing less than state of the art, designed and built by Global Finishing Solutions, the exclusive supplier to all OEM-endorsed paint shops. The booth at AmericanMuscle is a fully-loaded GFS system that employs numerous innovative technologies to produce a highly efficient, clean room environment and a minimal carbon footprint. The foundation for this eco-friendly program is the next-generation water-base paint that exceeds the quality and durability of traditional toxic solvent-base paints.

Using a semi-downdraft system, the paint booth achieves optimal painting conditions by shooting air down from the ceiling to evenly coat the painting surface. This method, combined with air-powered Sata paint guns, provides an optimal formula for finished product that surpasses even OEM factory standards, not to mention a local paint shop.

Surely a sign of the looming apocalypse, AmericanMuscle.com recently went under the bright lights, and behind the scenes of a nationally broadcast TV show, SPEED TV’s hit game show Pass Time. Filmed on location at many of America’s favorite grass roots drag strips, Pass Time offers a chance for any would-be drag racer, whether first timer or experienced pro, Mustang or minivan, to make a run pass as two contestants attempt to predict 1/4-mile drag times to win cash. Simply put, “Guess the time, win the cash – it’s that easy,” according to show host Brett Wagner.

As the current owner of three Ponies, AmericanMuscle.com on-the-phone Mustang expert Karen Baum is no stranger to the track. In fact, she’s been drag racing Mustangs for years, but never before in front of the cameras of a popular TV show. Karen, and fellow AmericanMuscle staffer Dave Kaeck, took their Mustangs to Maryland International Raceway where Pass Time producers selected the AmericanMuscle customer service rep out of 500 candidates to “make a pass” on camera. Driving an AmericanMuscle-prepped ‘03 GT Coupe, the Mustang enthusiast put the pedal to the metal and left all expectations in the dust in her first primetime appearance.

While Karen was getting ready for her SPEED TV debut, AmericanMuscle went behind the scenes to get a first-hand look at how Pass Time producers can turn a day at the drag strip into an engaging game show. From the host Brett Wagner, to Ken “The House” Herring, to Paige the ultra-hot car wrangler, these on-air personalities form the heart of the show. Add in two long days of passionate behind-the-scenes work and somehow the dedicated Pass Time team manages to turn out nine speed-filled episodes every time they pull into a drag strip.

There are plenty of mustang boards on the net now-a-days. There are loads and loads of information all over these boards. So why do members choose one over another? What seperates Modded Mustangs from the rest of the mustang boards on the net today? All you have to do is make one post to find out why. The answer is our members. I can honestly say that we have the best members on any forum on the internet today. I can also honestly say that I am proud to be a member of such an outstanding community.

Recently, one of our great members, BWAL aka Bubba was diagnosed with cancer. You can read about it HERE. This took a devastating toll on the community as a whole, but you can only imagine what it has done to Bubba. But Bubba has shown no sign of weakness whatsoever. There is no doubt in my mind that his mental strength will pull him through any endeavor that he will ever encounter, including this one. Bubba keeps the entire community in tears with laughter in every section. I know there has been many many times that I could not even play my xbox game because he had us all rolling during one of our MM Xbox live sessions. Bubba keeps this community turning.

So you can also imagine what kind of shock this news put us in. We were all devastated. Although Bubba never asked for anything, and continued to tell us that there was nothing that he wanted besides support, we banded together and helped out one of our own. Tiller and KingChronic setup a donation fund that was meant to buy him something that he would love. The thread can be found HERE. Although we fell short of our goal, we still managed to raise some money for him. You could not read one thread without seeing “Unite For Bubba” in everyones signature. It really showed how a car forum could come together for one of their own. Also, a photography contest was setup so that all of the proceeds went to the Bubba Fund, you can read about the contest HERE. With the help of our many photographers of the forum, and even a few that were not photographers, but just wanted to contribute, we managed to scrape up some more money for BWAL.

I know I speak for many, many members of this forum when I say thank you everyone. I know I am proud to be a member of this community, and will continue to do so until I am unable. You guys have inspired me, and showed me what friendship is about. Bubba, we know you’re gonna be ok man, and you already know that every single one of us is here for you if you need anything. I didn’t include the picture in here for your sake, but we all know that you my friend, still get bitches :).

Steve Saleen to the rescue!

That’s right, Steve Saleen, the former owner of Mustang-tuner and manufacturer Saleen Inc. has announced that his new company SMS Supercars will honor the warranty on any Saleen product purchased before February 2nd, 2009. Now that’s standing behind your product!

“The ones who have been left out in the cold are the loyal customers of Saleen products,” said Steve Saleen in a statement. “While my new company, SMS Supercars, has no legal or moral obligation to take up any of the warranty claims against Saleen Inc. or MJ Acquisitions, Inc., I would like to make a bold statement on the right way to treat customers.”

The news comes roughly a month after Saleen Inc.’s new owner, MJ Acquisitions, announced that it would not support the warranties on Saleen vehicles and parts sold before the Feb. 2nd date.

We predicted in that story that the new Saleen Inc., wouldn’t be long for this world and that prophesy seems to be playing out. First MJ Acquisitions scared off all it’s customers (and infuriated the Mustang community) and now Steve Saleen has made a move that will likely see all current Saleen product owners driving their American muscle straight into his open arms.

More: Steve Saleen’s New Company to Honor Old Saleen Warranties

The first aftermarket 2010 Mustang was revealed by Roush yesterday morning, beating Saleen and SMS to the public eye. Roush claims to have already sold out the the first two months of production.

Most of the modifications are pretty subtle, with slight tweaks to the rear end and most of the work being on the front end. The front fascia of this new design is being dubbed the “Shark Nose” with a sharper middle point and much more aggressive styling than in the previous years.

The target performance for the 427r is mid 12′s and a low 4 sec 0-60 with a 1.0g on the skidpad. It plans to do this by making 435hp (Net Sae) with the RoushCharger and the stage 3 Roush suspension. But enough talking here is a list of modifications.

Better known as Omz or Spence or “My favy butt buddy”. He is February’s Featured Member

MM: Your car, what is it?

Omz: My car is a 1997 V6 mustang, it has 157k miles on it and is a total PIECE!

MM: Would you rather a supercharger, 125 shot or Saleen body kit?

Omz: Seeing as my car would implode on a 125 shot, i’ll do that! … Unless the body kit came with a new paint job. My car could use a fresh paint of coat, BUT doing the M112 swap that is often inquired about in the V6 section would be pretty gnarly too. Hmm, 125 shot!

MM: What is the best aspect of being a mustang owner?

Omz: The best aspect of owning a mustang? Its recognizable by almost everyone, and is extremely impressionable on young children. I don’t live in the biggest of cities and often find my self driving by middle schools where every kid just stares as I go by.

MM: Who is the most likeable guy on the forum?

Omz: Their are a number of people that stand out in my mind, and oddly enough they are our female mustang enthusiasts, everyone likes them… dunno why

MM: Who is going to the next victim of your rampage of rage?

Omz: I like to think that those days are behind me, but if I get a chance, I would love to take down Derrick.

MM: Are you jealous of Drgnracn72′s relationship with Bwal09?

Omz: I am! Stephen knows that I claimed Bubba months before he did so he can just back the f*** off.

MM: You once ate 3 hot dogs, in retrospect does that now seem like “weaksauce”?

Omz: Yes sir, compared to my 20 McNugget and a McDouble cheese burger quest that I accomplished not once, but twice.
MM: What is the best Mustang ever produced?

Omz: 1969 Boss 302, no question about it, and if its yellow, bonus points.

MM: Have you ever wondered who would win if Acmillr and Unzippee Squared off UFC style?

Omz: I think that Acmillr is rather intimidating, but Rick is a bad a$$. Rick would dominate in my opinion.

MM: I think Jasonic should develop a donut scented candle, do you agree?

Omz: I would buy a dozen, no doubt, in a heart beat. Then I think I would rub the hot wax all over my body.
MM: You like to take a lot pictures, what or who, got you into photography?

Omz: My friend Brandon did. He showed up at my house last summer late one night with this massive camera he “borrowed” from school and said “check this s*** out!” I was hooked from then on.

MM: What is the best picture you ever took?

Omz: I’m not to sure. either one of these two.
but keep in mind i’m just an amateur photographer that shoots for fun, and more so I find my self usually taking pictures during the winter when the environment is optimal or anything. Ask me this one again this summer and I will find you a better one. Or you can go through the APAD thread and just see some of mine and other photo’s on this site.

MM: If under the threat that your car would be painted pink and yellow if you did not pick one, which would you choose the “bannana lamma” airbrushed along your driver side door or a big freaking vinyl of a running pony?

Omz: Banana Llama, only if its upside down. but I would prefer it to be on the hood and really large like.

:upsidedownllama

(If your still readin that was the end ^^^)
