Well, a few road racers and auto-cross cars run 245-45-16 tires, instead of going to 17-18" wheels. This particular tire size when coupled with a 16 X 8 or 16 X 9" wheel, will often times out perform the larger wheel and tire packages if your running a lighter weight, lower powered vehicle, so if your planning on keeping your car nice and light; 2500-2700 lb. this might provide a good balance of acceleration and handling.
The wheel offset will affect how much clearance you have at the fenders, so some careful measurements will be needed.
A 16 X 7" wheel will not perform as well with this tire size and I would recommend going to a 225 50 16 tire, if you are using this rim size.
I find that the Tire Rack is a pretty good resource and consistently has good pricing.
