Automatic problems?

So i bought my brother a 95 mustang because it was dirt cheap ($800) and it has the automatic transmission, now to the issue something seems to be wrong with the gear selector u have to force it into park, ut tries to skip reverse and it goes into nuetral easily now to put it in drive you have to move the selector to where 2nd should be and to get second you have to push it past where first gear should be anybody got ideas?? I have no experience with automatic transmissions.

Sounds like something mechanically wrong with the selector on the trans. I'd get underneath the car and check it out.
