is my tach off?

Hey guys, new to the site and to mustangs. Not new to the passion. Anyway, picked up a 99gt and was told it had a 373 rear gear installed. At 70mph in 5th using a tr3650, 17" mach 1 wheels and 245/45 tires my tach is showing 1800 rpm. Which made me assume he lied being that's about right for stock set up. I found I have a tr3650 instead of a t45 which I believe would have originally been in the car stock. Not much of a difference in the over drive gear tho.
So, I jacked up the rear and spun the tire counting 4:1 shaft to wheel. Assuming it was closer to the 373 he claimed. So now, I was told the car was tuned and or flashed by bama and I'm not sure any of that relates to the tach but the car idles warm at 350rpm. Which is low but it never stalls no matter how hard I brake, and makes me wonder if that's actually correct. If it was showing low then that would explain why I'm at 1800 at 70 with 373s which I read should be closer to 2200? Idk but can anyone think of why my numbers aren't proving to be true? Perhaps I should just feet inside the diff and really find out what I have? I believe the speed is correct. I have no idea but think in the tr3650 that's electronic instead of cable driven. I'm lost. Thanks.
I'm also told forged bottom end, stage one cams, port and polished pi heads/intake, they are pi, cai, bassani x pipe, glass packs, stage 3 clutch?, short throw which I believe is just a handle and not the whole piece but I don't know yet, it does have a body kit, cobra termi seats, mach rims, and a bunch of extra shit. Looks like he had two cars and pieced one together. Wouldn't the trans come from a newer new edge? Thanks again for listening.

You are correct, a t45 would have been stock instead of the 3650. Sounds like you have 4.10 gears rather than 3.73. Sounds to me (read: unprofessional opinion) like something's off in the tach. If you can hook up a scanner to the OBDII then you should be able to read what the computer is seeing. I would start there and see what's going on.

Something is definitely off. It is always best to compare the tach/speed in fourth instead of fifth. All of our manual transmissions have the same first four gears but have different overdrive gear ratios. A T-45 is .67:1 and a 2002-2004 T-3650 is .62:1. That in itself makes noticable difference. Still the only combination of transmission/rear end that would give you close to 1800 rpm at 70 mph with stock size tires is a 2002-2004 T-3650 with stock 3.27 gears. You are correct in that 70 mph with that transmission would be around 2200 rpm.

Since you checked the drive shaft turns it makes me think that the needle on your tack has been put on in the wrong place. This happens if someone puts on a gauge overlay. The previous owner of my car did that and put the speedometer needle on in the wrong place. If your needle was 400 rpm off then that would put your idle around 750 rpm. There is an easy way to check. You can make the odometer into a digital tach by putting it in the Instrument Test Mode. Then you compare the digital tach to the needle. Here are the instructions: BULLITT Archive Mustang Instrument Test Mode

ProCharger P-1SC, 9 psi, STD 396/383; Uncorrected 388/375; SAE 383/370.

Well, I just ran out to test it out and of coarse my odometer won't show. Its been on and off since I got it but soon as it comes back on I'll check. Must be a ground. The po did give me another gauge cluster but it had a crack in it so I assumed he changed it and didn't get the ground on right. Another thing I'll do is instead of turning the rear wheel once and counting the shaft turns I'll turn it ten times and count. I think that will get me a more accurate 37- 40 rotations. Hopefully not 32.

Umm what else, oh, I did clean the maf, throttle body and checked the tps with a volt meter. It was initially at 1.03 so I clocked it back to .95. That's OK right?
I should just have a tune done but it does run good. Only had a lazy o2 mil so I spent the couple hundred replacing those and I had no light for about two weeks. Now there's a large evap leak. It's not the fuel cap, Least I don't think, and the filler tube and grommet look good, I'm assuming its a purge valve but I suppose I'll have it smoke tested some day.

I have to say, this car is fun to drive. I'm digging the mustang. American muscle just sent me some rear window louvers, smoked oe headlights, mach 1 shifter ball, and keyless entry. I'm working on a suspension list as well. I have some frame connectors to weld up. And a ton of learning to do. I appreciate the help.

Sorry for thinking out loud.

The odometer turning on and off is a common problem with the 99-00's. My 00 did it too. A ground needs to be resoldered. As far as tuning goes, do you have the tuner the po used to put the bama tune on? If not it probably doesnt have a tune on it.

it sounds to me like someone was messing with the gauges in an attempt to fix the odometer light. My 99 used to do this as well. Second you can put a piece of tape on the tire lining up with the top center of your fender or floor and then spin the pinion 3.73ish times. When you roll back out if the tape is in the same location you will know. If you have concerns about not having cams post a video at idle and we will let you know if they are factory or not.

He told me they had it tuned at mustang week. ? I'm thinking the cams he claimed are simply pi cams even tho he claimed stage 1. It's quiet at idle but it idles very low. If the tach is even right. It wakes up and gets raspy tho just off idle. I'll have to get a video. I really don't care If it's modded like he stated cause I'd rather do it myself so I know exactly what I have. It astonishes me how people are cause I was polite and said straight up, just don't lie to me! I'd rather know the truth regardless of how many problems there are so I know what I'm working with. I knew I wanted the car, so long as it drove alright cause it was cheap, had a back seat, and I was ready for a mustang. He wanted $6500 and claimed to be a mechanic and said it had ten grand in motor and trans and ONLY needs the parking brake bolted down. Well soon as he showed up I was shaking my head. He had all four directional tires on backwards. (turned out each toe had over 65 psi!) Every one of them were different too. The body kit was actually nice but not finished. The back seat wasn't bolted in and the were no buckles in the back! The panel by the back seat(like head rest) was loose and of coarse the plastic tabs were broke. It has the mach stereo but it wasn't hooked up. (the add definitely mentioned a full stereo) The box in the trunk was just sitting there. Long story short the Amp in it was blown, along with almost every speaker in the car. The stereo was out of the dash and the bezel was broke. Came with spare bezel but for a different year with the 3 holes at bottom which didn't fit. I ended up putting in a new kenwood ( Bluetooth /awesome). 700$ in stereo and Rockford fosgate speakers. It's plastidipped to hide the bright green body kit. He didn't use enough plastidip so it will be a nightmare to get off. Lol it came with a shit ton of parts. He said it was his baby and he did all this work but couldn't tell me anything about the parts, tune, timing, compression, brand names, or whether the cams were degreed, nothing. It was leak free and the drivetrain is extremely clean. I do believe it was swapped or rebuilt i just don't believe he did it. Fluids looked great except the orange coolant! Ugh. Runs great and I love keeping it up past 4 grand. But not fast like my last few cars. It might be my imagination but I kinda thought it ran better before I changed the 02 censors . In just gonna have to get a tune or tuner and figure it out myself. I ended up getting it for 4grand and after prolly spending another 2 it's doing good. I know it has pi heads and intake but I really want to find out if the heads are actually port and polished like he swears. If not, I'll prolly punch him in the face for being such a liar. It still has stock injectors, stock throttle body and plenum, and stock exhaust manifolds. He said when it was on the dyno it had all those things aftermarket(lt, 78mm bbk, ect) but he sold them and put stock back on to purchase a twin Turbo kit. Then his wife got pregnant so he needed a SUV. I so wanted to believe him knowing full well that there's no way a bolt on gt was making his proclaimed numbers. Especially with all this stock stuff. Smh. But, I personally like the car and wanted one to play with so I took a chance. ... Wow, thanks for listening. In case anyone wonders, my last three daily drivers were a 76 stingray, 71 Nova, 64 gmc Swb fleetside. Ive learned a lot over the last 6 years playing with the sbc but I wanted to switch it up. I always loved my 02 f150 fx4 I had previously to them so... Mustang.

I really appreciate all the help from the forum. I'm just soaking it all in. I have a few things I won't use. Maybe I can help others that way.

I hope that made some of you smile. I know most of you know exactly where I'm coming from. I do a lot of trading and buying and selling on Craigslist. I don't have a lot of money so it's my way of getting to play with cool cars and motorcycles. I just can't believe how many people will lie straight to your face knowing full well that we'll run into each other again. It's a small world. I sold an extremely nice busa just before buying this car. I've also got my 08r1, 05 raptor 660r, 01 cr125r, and the bikes my kids ride. I have bought an sold prolly a dozen other dirt bikes, quads and toys and never have to lie. I have an 86 f250 too. All of my vehicles are from Craigslist except the first truck I bought( the 02 f150) which came from the dealer. Forget ever doing that again.

My buddy and I drove 2 hours to Indiana to check out and possibly buy this 97 z28 that was supposedly in amazing condition and garage kept with 70 something thousand on it. Turned out to be a piece of shit, had been in an accident, cracked bumper, unaligned body panels, etc. When we left and my friend asked him why there were those problems the guy said that there were no cracks and the panels were fine haha. I test drove the car because my friend can't drive stick well yet. When my friend told the guy he wasn't interested he told my buddy that he didn't drive it because he's a pussy and it would've scared the shit out of him haha. Unbelievable.

Even for all thats wrong with it you got it at a decent price and as long as the compression is good, the trannys fine and theres no rust, you came out on top. Also a lot of sn95's are on their second or third motor so thats no biggie.

Any idle vids of your car? If what he said was done is actually done you have yourself a nice little setup.

Here is an inexpensive mod that I think improves the looks of our 99-00 GTs.
Mustangworld - Move your Mustang wing back

Once the wing is moved back I think its one of the better looking wings for our cars.

ProCharger P-1SC, 9 psi, STD 396/383; Uncorrected 388/375; SAE 383/370.

Ya know, I've notice some of those wings are pushed back on the trunk. I like that and I agree that this wing is alright. Ima have to do that. Thanks. I will get a video on here soon too. Again tho, idle leaves little too be desired. I will stick the go pro on tho and get some video ripping around.

All the stage 1's I've heard had very little lope if anyway. If everything he said about the car has been in fact right then I would tend to believe it is what he said it is. I do hate taking a strangers word tho
