Screwed up gas gauge

I have a beater 2003 Grand Prix that I borrowed from my father in law to drive for the winter until I get a truck next year.

Not that I will probably actually fix it, but the gas gauge is acting all weird. Sometimes it reads clear full, sometimes it reads completely empty, and occasionally it shows the correct fuel level. It will go between all three while you're driving the car. What would cause that, a bad sender or what?
