50 rounds @ 25 yards

I decided to shoot without hearing protection as well (when I'm a cop, I won't have hearing protection in the field). Bad idea, my right ear is ringing like crazy. Could barely hear the lady at Wal-Mart when I stopped to pick up more ammo (yeah, I fucking loved shooting) and some hearing protection.
You only hit the target 5-6 times with 50 rounds? Practice, practice, practice dude, if you want to be a LEO.

I don't think anyone would appreciate me shooting at their barn I wish they had a target holder set up at like 15 yards or so. Just somethin a little easier to get me started.

Oh there will definitely be a lot of practice. Might go out tomorrow morning if it's warm by 8am.

I would start at 5-7 yards, then go up to 10-12 yards, once you can hit the 10 ring you will be alot better at 25 yards.

Go for speed and accuracy before distance. Some of those holes look like two got put in the same spot. It also looks like your bullets may have started tumbling.

How long have you been shooting for? What stance do you use?

If there's nobody else at the state park when I get there tomorrow, I'll stand closer to the target.

I've been shooting for.. That was actually the first time I've ever shot a real gun. My stance was sloppy and my grip was no better. I did a little research on stances/grips when I got home yesterday and from just testing them here at home, I'm going to try using the weaver stance and the straight-thumbs grip.

Don't let people give you to hard of time. You know what, we all where newbies at one point. Yeah, 25 yards with a hand gun is tough for the beginer, now my Gal's dad, who shoots alot, and has been in alot of clubs, can draw smiley faces..

Don't worry about it, the main thing is enjoy it, and be safe.

I can't tell you how many times Ive been to the gun club and seen people razz others for one thing or another, too much macho crap.. Now the guys who spot the newer shooters and then go over and talk to them, and show them interest, those are the real impressive people.. Not the guy who has the AR with 12 different scopes, 3 flashlights, a bi pod, and 4.5 mags tapped together, all while shooting 1 inch groups at the 50 yard range, while prone... LOL..

So don't worry about it, it was your first time, and you where proly more interested in just hearing it go bang than anything. Ive been there too, everytime I get a new gun I could really careless how good Im doing, I just want to shoot it.

Heck the first time I shot my RO(springfield range officer) was with my gal's dad, we where stepped off to 25 yards, I ran the first 7 rounds through it and I don't think I even hit paper.. The next mag he ran through and held a 2.5 inch group, not bad for never shooting it before, and it being 15 degrees out. The next mag I think I hit paper twice, he looks at me and says, "lets try 10 yards" LOL..

My point is instead of making someone feel like crap, which he easily could have, he didn't, and instead moved me up so I could enjoy myself, and not get frustrated. He knew I was nervous being that I haven't shot much hand gun.

Anyways, don't worry to much about how good your groups are, just enjoy yourself and be safe. You will get better..

Althought I must admit the bigger target comment had me laughing pretty good..

Hey that second one is pretty sweet.. I have trouble with pulling down and to the left. I have been working on it lately by trying to tighten my grip, it hasn't help alot. But according to that chart, it says to tighten the fingers, which makes sense.

Thank you!

That low and left or low and right can really fuck with your head. I've been stuck on stupid a few times when switching between guns before i learned about different triggers and how bullets act in flight.

mcqueen, i shoot weaver stance also. please always use hearing protection, we use it when we have to qualify lol. the farthest distance we shoot at is 25 yards, six shots in prone and six shots standing. all in all we shoot 50 rounds in a qualifying session. we start at 3 yards and go to 25. i think i saw a report that said most shooting occur within 15 feet for law enforcement. like someone else said speed and accuracy before distance. dont be fast tho, be smooth.

this is what we shoot at

anything within the outer circle will get you qualified easily. you can probably pick some of these up at pawn shops.

Theres one problem that stands out with that wheel. Bullets go low for a distance, then high for a distance, then starts to drop fast. You can think you're shooting low, but be shooting right and the bullet is dipping in its flight. If you're shooting right under where you want to, try running the Target out further. There's ballistic calculators on the web that show what I'm saying.

Here's an example: I have a 1911 that shoots low at 25' but at 50' it hits middle. I was fist told it was a flinch. There's no way a flinch will constantly shoot low at 25' and middle Target at 50'.

Being an expert marksman for the Navy, make sure you do get the practice, control your breathing and also most importantly trigger control. In addition of not anticipating the shot. When You're ready to shoot pull the trigger slowly, but firmly.

Sight alignment/sight picture, trigger control, breathing and grip/stance. The keys to being accurate with a pistol.

Do lots of dry fire practice at home. You want to be able to pull that trigger and have it break without the front sight moving.

Another thing we used to do is get about 4-5 dummy rounds, have a buddy load a mag for you and then you shoot. You will be able to tell if your moving at all before the shot when you get a dummy round in the chamber.
