Best Text Editor for Programming

What is preferred? Start my java class this week and wondering what ya'll recommend....

It all depends on what program. For java I used some form of JCreator, it is simple and effective.

I always used textmate. It was for Mac idk if it's for windows, and it costs money. But it works great for programming.

I am happy if a text editor numbers the lines for me. If you get an error on line 21, it really sucks to count out each line

Also, notepad++ will color code everything and if you leave something minor out such as a single comma that may be vital to the function in a php file, it will grey out the rest of the file after that mistake letting you know "Hey, you screwed up jackass. Fix it or nothing is going to work!"

Oh, and notepad++ is free.
