OK, I got the pump in this morning, looks great. Feels a good bit lighter then the old cast iron one I took off. Not bad for $35

Heres a shot getting everything put back together, I love the look of the new bracket, plus it has heim joints opn the lower bracket so it can be tightened without using a prybar lol.

I have everything back together, I am still working on fixing a few tiny leaks from the hose clamps, will prolly just need to get new clamps.

This car feels like an absolute beast without the mech fan! I still need to get an electric fan of some sort, but right now I only drive about a mile to work and back and its so cold it should be fine for now.

Alo I want to note that my lights no longer flicker and dim at night. Yay for the new alt and voltage regulator, and the new LED tail lights that don't draw as much power!

Update! Everything still works great, no flickering or dimming at night. The engine has been running a lil hot since theres no fan, well I went ahead and ordered a fan kit so i'll post pics and let you guys know how it goes once I pick it up.

Ok, I got the fan kit, it is Proform 67015. Made for a fox body but I've read that it can work on ours with slight modification. I turned the fan sideways and the mounting clips are seemingly the perfect size, I just need to get a couple longer bolts and some spacers (prolly washers) to hold it in place.

I have been looking at fans pretty hard lately. I wanted to get arund 2000 cfm, all the fans I see that do that draw 25+ amps and thats alot of draw for the stock alternator. This fan is rated at 2800 rpms and only draws 13.9 amps. If I can get those numbers I think that my overheating issue are behind me!

Ok, I have the fan mounted and am beginning on the wiring. I think that I will prolly wire this into the stator on teh back of the alternator so that it runs when the engine is running. I found that it will fit the 20" radiator perfectly if you turn it sideways and run longer bolts with some washers for spacers. Mine is offset to the drivers side to avoid the hoses but it should fit in between without issues. I had to use a ton of washers one the one side. i plan to get something better looking eventually, I just wanted the fan mounted.

I have the main wires drying right now, I crimped on the terminals and then coated with liquid elect tape to seal them up. I like the way it drys and gives it a professional look.

Also going to finish up the wiring on the electric fan. Decided to use the I terminal on the starter solenoid instead of the stator. Well see how this holds up. Just gotta clean up the wiring and it'll be good to go.

I got the wiring all cleaned up and tucked into some wire loom. Fan seems to work great, I need to get a working temp gauge to make sure tho.

Unfortunately I have noticed a bit of coolant in the oil, no oil in coolant so I think that maybe some leaked coolant leaked through the holes when I had the water pump off and had to clean out the bolt holes. "fingers crossed"

I did score a sweet deal on a clutch set! One step closer to the T5 swap.

Well theres a leak and I'm getting coolant in with the oil so I'm thinking that its teh timing cover gasket. I had such an issue with the water pump and i didn't pull the timing cover. I have 2 new sets of bolts for the timing cover coming so that I can hopefully remove and fix the leak on the car and also I grabbed a set so I can start building the roller block I have as a spare in case something goes wrong.

I'm going to be looking for a set of E7 heads or GT40 heads so I can have them rebuilt and put them on the spare motor.

Dang, I was gathering parts to further my T5 swap but it'll have to get pushed back for now.

I also went ahead and ordered some weather stripping for the trunk. Noticed that everything was damp in there. I'm prolly gonna go ahead and sand the interior down and then have it covered with truck bed liner.

Alright! Finally some time to work on the car. The In-laws were in town. What better time to spend wrenching then during a blizzard?

I got the new timing bolt kits in. I should have ordered new water pump bolts too but well see how things go.

I have the radiator out and the water pump off. You can hear a noise when you spin it by hand so thats prolly what screams like a banshee when the cars under load. To make things even easier I found out that apparantly they can't get this pump anymore...like the company doesnt even make it. We'll see how the manager handles this one.

They returned the pump without issue and I have a regular iron pump on order. I also had them orer in a new balancer. I will wait and decide whether to get it until I see it and compare to the original.

I do currently have the timing cover off and am in the process of cleaning decades of gunk and paint off of it. Oneinteresting thing to note is that my crank has the 3 bolt pulley like it should, however my bock has a casting date of '72. Which means that someone not only swapped in a newer motor, but at some point had the motor rebuilt to retain the 3 bolt dampner.

Upon cleaning I realized a bit of bad news. Even if I get this all put back together its not going to last too long as the timing cover is pretty much done for:

I have 2 other timing covers but they are for newer models and don't have a boss for teh mech fuel pump, which is fiune but idk if everything else will bolt up to the newer style. Guess I'll have to check and see.

I would suggest a trip to the wrecking yard for a new timing cover. Or canvasing craigslist. Don't put it back together like that. You will wind up with an oil pan full of water. Let me show you how that ends:

I work part time at advance auto on the weekends so I scoured the warehouses and found there was ONE timing cover sitting out there. So I did what any of us would do, I marked it down to half price and ordered it in. Looks great, I also got a small rotary tool to grind off the lame logo they cast into it instead of the part number. I did get a new water pump but its cast iron and I really wanted an aluminum one. Might have to see what Autozone offers. I also ordered a new balancer, not realizing that 289s and 302s had different part numbers. I'll take the old one in and see if it looks the same before I buy it.

Thanks for the replies guys. There was no way I was going to do all this work only to have to do it over once it eats through completely. The timing cover is aluminum and antifreeze can/will eat thru it after so long. What sucks is I have 2 other timing covers sitting in the garage but they are for EFI engines. I seriously thought about swapping one of those on and going with an electric pump but I decided not to open that can of worms right now. I'll get some pics of the new cover and parts and post up.
