Boom's 68 Restomod

Howdy everyone. I figured I'd go ahead and start my own project thread. I found this beautiful 68 coupe in Arizona and had it shipped out here to WV where I'm currently stationed. It has a 302 and a C4, this is Acapulco Blue I am told, it also has blue interior. More pics to follow!

My current plans are to replace the dash and trim pieces since they are worn. Build upgrades include a Borgenson power steering upgrade, (has power assist currently, but i don't think it works) and also I plan to upgrade to at least front discs. I have a Wilwood kit in mind, possibly upgrade to power brakes as well.

So let me know what you guys and gals think!

Well I ordered new dash trim pieces and new top and knee pads for the dash as well. I need to look into the wiring and see why my one turn signal isnt working, also I have to replace the switch/cam in the column so that my turn signal will actually stay without me holding it there.

Did a bit of work on under the hood last night. Sanded the air cleaner down and shot it over with a fresh coat of Ford Blue. Also sanded part of the fenderwell down to coat it in a nice semi gloss black.

I also ordered a front disc brake swap kit with a power booster also to get rid of the manual drum brakes.

Thanks man! I am stoked and have lots of plans for this car. The brakes were a priority before I start with the other stuff. I ordered my kit from Dennis at CSRP aka discbrakeswap.com. He said I should have it in a week.

I am gonna try and look into a few small issues I've had today. My oil pressure gauge and coolant temp gauges don't work properly so I am going to dig around and see if it is the senders or if it is the guages/wiring. I have already noticed that it appears my motor has the wrong type is oil pressure sending unit (light style vs guage). To make this project even easier it appears that I will need some sort of adapter to mount the proper unit as the PS bracket is in the way..Awesome!

Brake kit news! My kit is shipped and will hopefully be here in 3-4 days

Could very well be that the wire connecting to the oil pressure sending unit has come off. I have had that happen to me, it had a weird style connector and it came off one day. Went to Autozone picked up a cheap open circle connector and bolted it on and it has worked fine since. Hopefully it is that easy of a fix for you
This the adapter you were talking about?

Mine has that and I don't even have PS

That is exactly what I think I need. My motor currently has the little sending unit meant for an idiot light, not an actual gauge. I plan to check out some cheap gauges tonight also after work and look into mounting them into my new cluster once that finally arrives. I have an entire new dash set-up waiting to go in once my new dash pad arrives. The new parts look so much better then the 42+ year old stock ones.

Ya that will really bring the interior back to life and make everything pop when looking at it. You could also get some LED lights for the gauges. Easier to see and you can get different colors. I have blue ones and I love them. Much better looking and easier to see over the dull green regular bulbs it had.

Yeah I plan to swap all the lights to LED eventually. I want to run all aftermarket gauges but they are pretty expensive to buy all at once. So I'm thinking maybe just do a few now and then the rest later.

BTW Blue, what hood are you running? Your car looks great!

Thanks, the blue hood in my sig was a stock hood that had the scoop molded to it. The black cowl hood I have now is from KAR and got it because the molded hood scoop started to show cracks and wasn't done all that great, wasn't a bad craigslist buy at 50 dollars though

Nice, my car needs a new hood as it has a couple dings and it had hood pins at one time that have been covered over with Bondo, but it starting to crack through. Might jsut go with a stock hood with turn signals. They're cheap and nice looking.

I got the whole power steering pump/bracket off. Also I took the two lines out at the control valve. Looks much cleaner under the hood. I see myself replacing the water pump gasket and maybe the pump itself while i'm at that. The second I loosened the one bolt holding the bracket on I had coolant dripping out....Not to mention it looks like someone murdered a tube of RTV putting the water pump on my engine.

Got a new oil preessure sending unit, have to get some brass fittings from Lowes to allow it to fit. Hopefully that fixes my guage issue.

Well The new sending unit works! Like a champ! Now I just have to get the coolant gauge working and I'll have a fully funtional instrument cluster

Figured I would add some pictures of what I've been talking about here the last few days.

This is the engine bay when I got it.


This is what it looks like now. Painted the pass side fenderwell, have to do the drivers side this weekend.


In this pic you can see the wrong oil sending unit and also you can see how cramped it is in there.


Here is the new proper sending unit and the fittings to make it work. Also notice that I removed the Power steering pump and bracket in this picture.


Here is a couple pictures of my current dash. Notice the top pad is cracked completely in half



Here is a picture that shows the old dash pieces next to the new ones. Looks so much better. Sorry the pics are so small...Dang photobucket.


Usually my pics are much bigger then this, but my flickr account is maxed out with Bronco pics. I'll try and find a better way to post pics cause these are way too small.

Doing some sanding today. I have the grille off and am sanding the core supoport and the driver side of the engine bay down. Must be 4-5 coats of various color paint on there!

Thanks! I am glad that all that was wrong was that sending unit. Yesterday I sanded down the core support and drivers side of the engine bay. I will get some more pics but here is one after I laid the first coat.

I stopped at the shock tower because I have the power boost and disc brake upgrade coming so I will clean and paint the rear part when I remove the master cylinder.

You are actually going to be motivating me. That looks great and I get some free time so I might do this too. What grit sand paper did you use and is it like high temp rattle can paint?
