Nikon d3100 is a good low budget entry camera

Nikon D3100 14 2 MP Digital SLR Camera Red Kit w AF s DX VR 18 55mm Lens 018208254866 | eBay

Nikon D3100 14 2 MP Digital SLR Camera Black Kit w AF s DX VR 18 55mm Lens | eBay

Bump up to a D3200 if you want a like 10MP more, but it's like $250 on the low end of things...

...or just buy her a Nokia Lumia 1020 with a 41MP camera...

Nokia Lumia 1020 32GB Dual Band Windows 8 Smartphone at T Choice of 3 Colors | eBay

Bought that for my wife and it's amazing... took a picture of my cats face and you can see every strand of hair with little to no pixilation.

No need to even contract the Lumia if you only use it for a camera, and you can still DL apps and games or even upload your pictures over wifi.

I think she'd like a point and shoot style camera though. Any recommendations?

I don't know many compact cameras that are worth their money, however a friend with a coolpix said it was good since it's cheap but reliable. she later moved up to a d3200 to get nicer pictures though.

My friend bought one like below when it was more than 250 bucks and it is a neat little camera. I see it as kind of a middle ground of point and shoot and dslr. It is small but takes pretty nice photos. I don't know what if any lenses it comes with though since I didn't read the link just got it for ref.

I bought my mom a Nikon coolpix for Christmas a few years ago. She doesn't know much about taking pictures. She likes it a lot. Only had 5 or 6mp though. The slr camera is a good intro camera.
